Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting 2-year-olds by Wild Ruler and Wootton Bassett (GB) chase success on debut at Scone and Pakenham, respectively.

Scone, Race 1, 1.15pm AEDT, Vinery Stud 2YO Handicap, $27,000, 900m

Savage Look, 2-year-old gelding (Wild Ruler x Katie’s Eyes {Leroidesanimaux {Brz}})

The sharply-bred Savage Look (Wild Ruler) makes his debut on his hometrack at Scone on Thursday for local trainer Rodney Northam.

He has looked talented at the trials winning both of them in smart fashion at Scone and Muswellbrook, and he looks a good chance in the hands of Reece Jones.

Savage Look is out of the five-time American winner and dual Listed winner Katie’s Eyes (USA) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}), who has already left three winners at stud. She herself is a half-sister to the Listed placed duo of Happy Constitution (USA) (Costitution {USA}), and Margie is Livid (USA) (Temple City {USA}).

In recent times Katie’s Eyes has not had a lot of luck at stud, but she was served by Ozzmosis last spring.

Savage Look was originally purchased by Alma Vale Thoroughbreds at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $130,000 from the Newgate Consignment. He was then passed in short of his $200,000 reserve at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Southside Pakeham, Race 1, 5.45pm AEDT, SJM Turf & Civil Maiden Plate, $45,000, 1100m

Basston, 2-year-old colt (Wootton Bassett (GB) x Princess Wildfire {Sepoy})

The well-bred Basston (Wootton Bassett {GB}) makes his debut on Thursday at Pakenham for trainers Ben, Will and JD Hayes.

He has had a couple of jump-outs at Flemington and Werribee earlier this month and he has looked tidy without being asked for too much. With Ben Allen on board, he looks an each-way chance in a small field.

Basston boasts a deep pedigree. He is the fifth foal out of Princess Wildfire (Sepoy), who was placed on the track but is a half-sister to Group 1 winning stallion Star Witness, three-time Group 3 winner and sire Nostradamus, and the Listed winner Embracer (Sebring). She is also a three-quarter-sister to Elusive Leone (Elusive Quality {USA}), dam of three-time stakes winner Vulpine (Snitzel).

Since producing Basston,, Princess Wildfire has foaled a yearling filly by Justify (USA), a Shinzo colt last August, and was served by Cosmic Force last spring.

Basston was passed in short of his $300,000 reserve at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Looking Back:
