Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three well-bred 3-year-olds by Snitzel and Hello Youmzain (Fr) chase maiden success at Seymour on Tuesday.

Washington Lilac, 3-year-old filly (Snitzel x Zighy Bay (USA) {Tapit {USA}})

The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Washington Lilac (Snitzel) chases her maiden win at her fourth start at Seymour on Tuesday over 1300 metres.

She ran two very good placings at Sandown and Kilmore during her first preparation, and since having a nice break she has jumped-out twice to prepare herself for her resuming run.

Washington Lilac is beautifully bred. She is a three-quarter-sister to Qafila (Not A Single Doubt) who was the winner of the G1 South Australian Derby, G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes and the Listed Debutant Stakes. There is also an abundance of American and Japanese stakes winners within the pedigree.

Her dam Zighy Bay (USA), in recent times has left a yearling filly by Snitzel, and was served by Switzerland last spring.

Washington Lilac was purchased by TFI for $625,000 from the Silverdale Farm draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Privateer, 3-year-old filly (Snitzel x Girandola {Medaglia D’Oro {USA}})

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Privateer (Snitzel) makes her third start at Seymour on Tuesday over 1200 metres. The beautifully bred filly disappointed when running ninth on debut back in August, but ran well for fourth resuming at Werribee on January 12 behind Pure Silk (Toronado {Ire}).

Privateer is out of the unraced Medaglia D’Oro (USA) mare Girandola, she is very well bred being a half-sister to the Group 1 winner and stallion Invader and the Hong Kong Group 2 winner Not Listenin’tome (Dylan Thomas {Ire}).

In recent times Girandola has left a yearling colt by St Mark’s Basillica (Fr), and was due to foal to Paddington (GB) last spring.

Zayyano (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Hello Youmzain (GB) x Ruqqaya (NZ) {Van Nistelrooy {USA}})

The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Zayyano (NZ) (Hello Youmzain {GB}) will have his third start over 1429 metres at Seymour on Tuesday. He disappointed on debut back in September, but ran a solid enough fourth resuming at Pakenham on January 16 behind Miss Maranda (Written Tycoon).

Zayyano is the ninth foal from the Van Nistelrooy (USA) mare Ruqqaya (NZ), who was a two-time winner in New Zealand over staying trips.

She has gone on to thrive as a broodmare, having left six winners including Grunt (NZ), who now stands at Yulong Stud, but before that was successful in the G1 Australian Guineas and the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes.

Zaydani (NZ) (Savabeel) is another of her progeny and she has been successful at Group 2 level and Listed level twice.

Ruqqaya is also well-related being a half-sister to Ocean Park (NZ), who has been a very successful stallion at Waikato Stud and was a five-time Group 1 winner on the track.

Since producing Zayyano, Ruqqaya has left a yearling colt by Proisir, and was due to foal to Paddington (GB) last September.

Zayyano was purchased by Lindsay Park Racing and Cambridge Stud for $400,000 from the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the Trelawney Stud draft.
