A selective but resilient market closed out the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, where almost $11 million was traded across two days, highlighted by strong demand for a Zousain colt that sold for $250,000.

At A Glance

Clearance for the sale ended up at 67%, down from last years 73%, and the aggregate increased to $10,935,500, ahead of 2025's figure of $8,312,500. 296 horses sold this year compared to 240 in 2025.

The average lifted to $36,944 compared to $34,635 in 2025, while the median lifted in 2026 to $27,500 compared to $25,000.

The number of six figure lots this year was 12 which was only slightly down from last year when 13 lots made six figures.

The top Lot on Day 2 and for the sale was Lot 416, a colt by Zousain who was sold by Robyn Wise to Campton Racing Pty Ltd and Stable 23 for $250,000.

Sears Racing were the sale’s top buyers by gross, spending $468,000 on six yearlings, three on each day. Webster Racing topped the averages for the sale, spending an average of $102,500 on two yearlings.

Kenmore Lodge headed the vendors list by aggregate, selling 32 yearlings for $1,450,000. By average (two or more sold), Robyn Wise finished with a $80,500 average for six yearlings sold and a 100% clearance rate for the draft.

Better Than Ready lead the stallions by gross for the sale with $1.537 million from 36 lots, while Zousain topped the averages (2 or more sold) for the whole sale at $81,833 across six lots sold.

Selective market delivers solid trade at Magic Millions March Sale

The Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale closed after two days of trade that saw buyers remain selective, but still willing to compete strongly for the right horses.

Over the two sessions almost $11 million was traded, with 296 lots sold at an increased average of $36,944 and a clearance rate of 67%, reflecting a market that rewarded quality individuals.

Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said the tone of the market remained consistent throughout the sale.

"Again today was a selective market. There were plenty of traders here to buy and when a good colt walked in and ticked the boxes, there was great demand."

Despite the selectivity, Bowditch noted the overall results showed improvement on the previous year.

"All in all, while being selective, we've sold significantly more horses than last year with a higher average and a larger gross."

He added that opportunities still remained for buyers following the conclusion of the sale.

"There's still plenty of horses that would be worthwhile purchases for people willing to make an offer."

Bowditch also explained that the updated format of the sale had drawn a slightly different group of buyers, while broader economic and regional challenges had also influenced attendance from some traditional participants.

"The new format for the sale did attract a different buyer demographic. We are not immune to everything that is going on in the world. There's plenty of farmers up north dealing with floods and the scarcity of diesel and petrol prices means there's other things happening in their lives."

"Being here wasn't as possible for them as it would have been in the past. That had some effect on the regional Queensland market."

Even so, Bowditch said strong results were still achieved for the right horses across the two days.

"There were some very good prices in amongst the sales over the past two days," Bowditch added. "For the right product it was a very solid market."

Campton flexes his muscles for Zousain colt

Local trainer Adam Campton proved strongest of them all as he dug deep in a spirited bidding duel to secure Lot 416 - a strong Zousain colt out of So Cait (Smart Missile) for $250,000 in partnership with Stable 23 from the Robyn Wise draft. The colt ended up being the highest seller for Day 2, as well as for the whole sale.

“I knew we had to be pretty strong but thankfully we have a great client in Hong Kong and were lucky for him to support us and we got the job done.” Campton said. “There wasn’t much juice left, we had to squeeze it out, but I don’t need to describe how good he was.

“Everytime we got him out, he just had swagger about him, a beautiful walk. I love the Zousain’s, I have a number of them, a heap of them have went to Hong Kong already.

“He’s from a great farm in Robyn, she produces horses over and over again, and she knows her horses from top to bottom. She is a very good horse woman, and you want to buy good horses from good people."

The colt is out of the Smart Missile mare So Cait, who was unraced but is well related, being a half-sister to last seasons very smart juvenile Shining Smile (Spirit Of Boom), who won five races in a row as a 2-year-old, including three at Listed level.

This is the extended family of the outstanding dual-hemisphere stallion Starspangledbanner.

The similarity to Hidden Wealth too much to resist

It was early on Day 2 when Gollan Racing, alongside Archer Park Racing, made a splash paying $200,000 for Lot 295 - a colt out of Miss Stash (Bradbury’s Luck). A five-time winning sprinter herself, Miss Stash is the dam of the 11-time winner Hidden Wealth (Better Than Ready), successful in the G3 George Moore Stakes and two other Listed races, a full brother to the colt on sale on Friday.

The main reasoning behind the purchase was the clear similarities the colt had to his full brother, who has been a star for the stable. Tony Gollan Racing’s General Manager Andrew Dunemann said the colt had caught his eye immediately, with the comparison to Hidden Wealth made before they even realised he was a full brother.

“When we first walked in on Sunday, it’s the first horse that I seen when I walked in and we didn’t know who it was, and we both said that looks like Hidden Wealth, anyway we followed him, and it was his full brother,” Dunemann said.

“So that was pretty cool, the Archer Park boys are in, so that’s great.

“I spoke to Chris Wessel and they are great supporters of ours and have been for a long time and they have jumped straight in. They will take half the horse, he will race in their colours and we will syndicate the rest to our owners.

“All in all a really good result.”

All three of Miss Stash’s foals to race have been winners. All Stashed Up (Better Than Ready) has been a five-time winner, while Bankroll Babe (Better Than Ready) has also saluted the judge. Interestingly, all have been by Better Than Ready, and Gollan has picked up five of his progeny at this sale.

Gollan Racing has been very busy throughout the sale picking up horses on their own accord but also with six other ownership combinations. In total they have played a part in picking up 12 yearlings for a total amount of $944,000, at an average of $78,666.

The Kiwis have been busy

Ka Ying Rising’s breeder and successful New Zealand trainer Fraser Auret has been a visitor to the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale before, where he has dabbled with some purchases, but this year he has taken the plunge and has ended up purchasing four colts back to his Marton base in New Zealand.

He picked up four value purchases including a Brave Smash (Jpn) colt from the Waylon J Stud draft for $25,000, a Microphone colt from the Newhaven Park draft for $20,000, an Alabama Express colt for $10,000 from the Golden Grove draft, and a Daumier colt from KBL Thoroughbreds that he also paid $10,000 for.

“I have been a few times and Magic Millions do such a wonderful job, they have opened up this year for the non QTIS horses and there has definitely been a horse for everyone here, right from the bottom to the top," Auret said. “I do believe the sale will continue to grow over the next year or two also, as it is such a good value sale.”

When asked about plans for the colts he purchased, Auret explained, “I’m a bit of an everything man, I train in New Zealand, and I also trade a lot so I will see how I go with these colts, I am very happy with them, there is a lot of value in this sale if you are willing to do the legwork.

“I've had a few mates from New Zealand ring and comment saying why arent they here at the sales also, so maybe there might be a few more Kiwi’s over here next year, it has felt like home, there has been a fair bit of rain.

“The sales are going in the right direction and I'm happy with my purchases.”

Interestingly, another New Zealand trainer from the Central Districts has also been busy, with Lisa Latta picking up three fillies by a range of sires including Diatonic (Jpn), Artorius, and In The Congo at an average of $37,333.

In total, 17 yearlings have been purchased to make their way across the Tasman, which totals 5.8% of the sold lots, while Queensland locals picked up 63.7% of the yearlings sold.

Kenmore Lodge has a strong sale

Leading into the sale it always looked as though Kenmore Lodge was going to have a very strong result, and so it proved, and importantly they bucked the sale trend of low clearance rates.

It wasn’t just the 11 yearlings sold on behalf of Arrowfield that made up the strength of the draft. That was only roughly a third of it, with 32 of the 35 lots offered by Kenmore Lodge selling for a very strong clearance rate of 91.4%, well above the overall sale clearance rate of 65.9%.

The draft also produced a total gross of $1,405,000 at an average of $43,906 - a figure above the sale average - while two lots reached the six-figure mark. These included the Dundeel (NZ) colt purchased by Riversley Park yesterday for $100,000 and a colt by The Autumn Sun purchased on Day 2 by Macedon Lodge, also for $100,000.

“We have had a good clearance rate, good quality horses, and the ones they rally wanted sold well and that's what is happening. That is the markets desire,” Kenmore Lodge’s Kellie Bond commented.

When asked about the draft’s top lot for the day, Bond added: “The Autumn Sun colt had a nice physique, he ticked all of the boxes and the mares' pedigree kicked him along and he was just a good individual.

“There was plenty of appeal in him, the stallion is going to a new level at all times.”
