‘Elated’: How it feels to breed the sire of a Golden Slipper winner!

7 min read
What’s the next best thing to breeding a G1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner? Breeding the sire of a Golden Slipper winner. Torryburn Stud bred and sold Home Affairs, the sire of Guest House. The farm’s recent graduate list includes Voyage Bubble, Aysar, Mare Of Mt Buller, and Idle Flyer.

The frustrations of the COVID-hit Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale of 2020 are long forgotten at Torryburn Stud, replaced with the thrills that their dual Group 1-winning graduate Home Affairs has given them. Coolmore Stud put their faith in Torryburn’s reputation for breeding good horses to purchase Home Affairs remotely in 2020 for $875,000.

And now he’s the sire of G1 Golden Slipper winner Guest House (Home Affairs).

“We have arrived at the Easter sale quite elated with the achievement of Home Affairs siring the Golden Slipper winner in his first crop,” said Mel Copelin.

Miss Interiors’ brilliant first two foals

At the time of Home Affairs’ sale as a yearling, his year older half-brother Aysar, a son of Deep Field, was unraced. He would win a juvenile race at his second start as a June 2-year-old, only a few months after Home Affairs was sold. Second in the G1 Caulfield Guineas to Ole Kirk, Aysar would win the Listed Chautauqua Stakes to conclude his career, but not until after Home Affairs had won the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and G1 Lightning Stakes as a 3-year-old.

Aysar now stands at stud in Western Australia, where his oldest crop are yearlings. Their dam, Miss Interiors (Flying Spur) sadly died in January 2025 with four winners from five to race.

“While we don’t have a yearling by him to sell this week, we have opened our emails to wonderful updates on the full sister to Home Affairs and the Home Affairs half-sister to Voyage Bubble who have been retained and currently at the breaker,:" said Copelin.

Torryburn Stud have retained the last foal from Miss Interiors, the well-named 2-year-old filly Grand Designs (I Am Invincible).

Voyage Bubble (Deep Field), who won last season’s Triple Crown in Hong Kong, has a half-sister by Home Affairs who Torryburn Stud have also retained. Their dam, Raheights (Rahy {USA}) was bought out of retirement after Voyage Bubble won his first Group 1 and sent to Home Affairs, and the 2-year-old filly The Bubble (Home Affairs) is her last foal.

Other recent Torryburn Stud graduates including G3 Epona Stakes winner Mare Of Mt Buller (Dundeel {NZ}), and G3 Angst Stakes winner Idle Flyer (Dundeel {NZ}), who were both sold through the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Six nice yearlings on offer in 2026

Torryburn Stud typically offer less than 10 yearlings a year at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and this year is no different with six lots on offer.

“We have a neat draft to present here this week, with some true quality fillies that are second generation born and raised on the farm," Copelin said. "So whatever the results will be next week, we are already winning and truly proud of the product we are presenting.”

Torryburn Stud have gone back to Home Affairs’ sire I Am Invincible with their star mare Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense {USA}) who was raced by the late Alan Osburg, a great friend of Torryburn's Cornish family. She won the G1 Coolmore Classic of 2019 as well as four other stakes races and retired with earnings over $1.5 million.

Her filly by I Am Invincible is Lot 272.

Dixie Blossoms went to Exceed And Excel for her first three matings, producing two winners and an unraced 3-year-old filly. Lot 272 is her fourth foal. Dixie Blossoms is also a half-sister to Listed winner Excel (Falbrav {Ire}).

The Pinnacle (So You Think {NZ}) is a Torryburn Stud-raced Group 3-winning mare whose yearling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB) is Lot 149.

So You Think (NZ), who sadly died last year, is building a steady record as a broodmare sire. It’s early days for him in this role, but he already has two Group 1 winners under his belt with G1 Golden Slipper winner Fireburn (Rebel Dane) and European Group 1 winner Puchkine (Fr) (Starspangledbanner).

Lot 149 is the fifth foal of The Pinnacle, whose first three foals to race are all winners, and she has an unraced 2-year-old gelding still to come by Home Affairs. A daughter of stakes-placed Spire (Danehill {USA}), The Pinnacle is a half-sister to two other stakes winners being Under The Eiffel (Mossman) and Tower Of Lonhro (Lonhro).

The third of the second generation fillies in this draft is Lot 159, a Zoustar filly from Torryburn Stud bred and raced stakes placed mare Toryjoy (Street Cry {Ire}). Toryjoy won five races and over $500,000. She’s a young mare, and her oldest foal is 3-year-old filly Lady Thatcher (Brazen Beau) who made her debut recently. She has a 2-year-old filly Maurjoy (Maurice {Jpn}) who is unraced.

This Zoustar filly comes with plenty of residual value, with her second dam being G3 Tesio Stakes victrix Joy Of Flight (Flying Spur) who won nine races and produced three stakes horses. Group 1 winner Grand Journey (Good Journey {USA}) is a member of this family.

A half-sister to Group 1-placed Payline (Shooting To Win) is Lot 107, an Ole Kirk filly with plenty to recommend her. Not only is this filly by last season’s Champion First Season Sire, but she’s out of a stakes-winning mare who is a proven broodmare.

Lot 107’s dam Slots (Casino Prince) won the Listed Just Now Stakes to headline her seven career victories, and her first two foals are both winners, headlined by Chris and Corey Munce-trained Payline, who placed in the 2025 G1 Doomben 10,000.

Slots, whose 2-year-old gelding Like An Eagle (Home Affairs) is unraced, is a daughter of stakes placed Snippets mare Serein. This is the family of Group 2 winner Nicoscene (Nicconi) and Group 1-placed Listed winner Citirecruit (Citidancer {Ire}).

The first of the fillies through the ring for Torryburn Stud is Lot 92, by Capitalist from winning mare Sienna Lady (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

G1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist is now the sire of two Group 1 winners, and this filly’s imported dam won over a mile in Ireland. Her first foal, a 2-year-old filly, has been named Sienna Of Brighton (Palace Pier {GB}).

This is the family of Hong Kong’s triple Group 1 winner California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner), and a good reminder of Torryburn’s Voyage Bubble who won the G1 Steward’s Cup in 2024 when California Spangle was fourth that day. The pair met in the same race in 2025 with Voyage Bubble again coming out on top.

Need a colt from the stallion producing farm

There is only one colt among the six yearlings on offer, and he’s Lot 53 by Harry Angel (Ire). The chestnut colt is the second foal of stakes placed Royal Canford (Ire) (Canford Cliff {Ire}), whose first foal is a 2-year-old filly by Trapeze Artist.

Harry Angel has sired the Group 1 winners Tom Kitten, Private Harry, and War Machine (NZ), as well as the Group 2 winners Stretan Angel, Angel Capital and Arkansaw Kid.

Royal Canford is a daughter of unraced High Chaparral (Ire) mare Ryalahna (Ire), and this is the family of Group 1 winners Gilt Edge Girl (GB) (Monsieur Bond {Ire}) and Arcano (Ire) who stands at stud in Italy where he’s sired an Oaks winner.
