Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Three promising sorts by Brutal (NZ), Written Tycoon and Shalaa (Ire) chase success at Newcastle on Tuesday.
Newcastle, Race 1, 6.45pm AEDT, Davali Thoroughbreds Maiden Plate, $42,000, 1850m
Cavalry, 4-year-old gelding (Brutal (NZ) x Tarragon (NZ) {Reliable Man {GB}})
The Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes-trained Cavalry (Brutal {NZ}), is set to make his fifth start at Newcastle on Tuesday over 1850 metres.
He has been a model of consistency in his career so far, placing in three of his four starts, including a fast finishing second at Pakenham at his last start over 1400 metres behind Titan's Spirit (Impending).
Cavalry is the second foal from the unraced Tarragon (Reliable Man {GB}), who is well-related being a half-sister to the G3 Rotorua Cup winner The Good Fight (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}), and the Listed winner Pravana (Anabaa {USA}).

Further back in the family are the Group 1 winners Cronus (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice).
Since producing Cavalry, Tarragon has produced an unnamed 3-year-old filly by Farnan and was served by Wild Ruler last spring.
Cavalry was originally a $110,000 purchase by Rhys Smith from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale. He was then a successful pinhook when selling from the Kulani Park draft for NZ$230,000 to Hawkes Racing at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Newcastle, Race 2, 1.50pm AEDT, New Zealand Bloodstock Maiden Handicap, $42,000, 900m
Lady Catalina, 2-year-old filly (Written Tycoon x Away Game {Snitzel})
Lady Catalina, a daughter of Yulong’s Champion stallion Written Tycoon, will be making her debut at Newcastle for her trainer Ciaron Maher.
The well-bred 2-year-old trialled nicely at Hawkesbury on March 23 behind Ghostbuster (Hanseatic).
Lady Catalina is the first foal from the well-related and very quick Away Game (Snitzel) who won $3.75 million on the track including the G2 Percy Sykes Stakes, she was very unlucky not to win a Group 1, although did manage three Group 1-placings including a runner-up position in the G1 Golden Slipper.

A full sister to Away Game is Modern Wonder (Snitzel), she was successful at Listed level among her three wins.
Since producing Lady Catalina, Away Game has produced a Written Tycoon yearling colt, a Pierata weanling filly and was served by First Settler last spring.
Lady Catalina was purchased for $1,800,000 by Resolute Bloodstock and Ciaron Maher Bloodstock from the Yulong draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Newcastle, Race 3, 2.25pm AEDT, Horsepower Feeds & Supplements Class 1 Handicap, $42,000, 900m
Confidentiality, 3-year-old filly (Shalaa (Ire) x Confidential Queen {Shamardal {USA}})
The promising Joseph Pride-trained Confidentiality (Shalaa {Ire}) will have her third start at Newcastle on Tuesday.
The Shalaa (Ire) filly won very nicely in maiden grade over 1100 metres back in October, and after a break and a couple of nice trials at Warwick farm she looks ready to run well in a fresh state.
Confidentiality is the fifth foal out of Confidential Queen (Shamardal {Ire}), she only raced three times but she has made a name for herself as a broodmare leaving four winners with the best of these clearly being the outstanding Private Eye (Al Maher).

Private Eye has been a 14-time winner of just under $12.9 million, he has been successful in the G1 Epsom Handicap, four other Group 2 races and another three Group 3 races. He has also ran second and third in The Everest.
Confidential Queen in recent times has left yearling and weanling fillies by Anamoe, and was served by Farnan last season.
Confidentiality was passed in short of her $500,000 reserve at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
