Leading into the 2026 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, we asked some of the industry's leading figures a new question each day. Here's how they answered.

Question of the Day: What's one must-have in a yearling's pedigree?

Byron Rogers - Stable Analytics: I'm big on the vendor/farm it came from. There's a big difference, even when you normalise for the sire or dam. Good vendors raise and sell good horses.

Peter O’Brien - Segenhoe Stud: Line breeding or inbreeding to superior females.

Matthew Ennis - G1 Goldmine and Stallion Match: Our recent studies have shown generations 1-3 has the largest influence. Natural selection ensures the sire side is always pretty good, however the dams side must have stakes substance. Lastly, the dams family must be in harmony with the sire's.

Scott Darby - Darby Racing: Is it saleable.

Adam White - Vinery Stud: A bit of 2-year-old form amongst the first couple of dams.

Paul Moroney - Paul Moroney Bloodstock: A genetic physical map highlighting a major progenitor's best attributes.

Will Johnson - William Johnson Bloodstock: Winners help! Stakes winners even more so.

Sheamus Mills - Sheamus Mills Bloodstock: A good dam sire. Or be a proven producer or not.

Dave Mee - Pinhook Bloodstock International: Consistency of distance within the female family and ideally I like to buy one out of a (lightly raced) mare that had ability.

Albert Bosma - Go Racing: A good cross.

Craig 'Boomer' Rounsefell - Boomer Bloodstock: A Group 1 winner on the page.

Alison Hush - Davali Thoroughbreds: Strong female line.

Sean Driver - Kurrinda Bloodstock: A good broodmare sire.

Suman Hedge - Suman Hedge Bloodstock: I love seeing evidence of black type performance. It doesn't have to be close up but you do like to see evidence that a family is capable of achieving it, and if there are multiple examples of this is gives you more confidence it can happen again.

Jimmy Unwala - Avesta Bloodstock: I have always been a value buyer, if the price is right I will find something in there to justify it.

Will Larkin - Malua Racing: Stakes winners. If there hasn't been any produced through generations of the family then your chance that yearling is the one is very slim.

Manny Gelagotis - Gelagotis Racing: A successful pedigree cross is very important to me.

Jason Micallef - Monarch Racing Syndications: Proven crosses.
