Bowditch pleased with the way the sale unfolded
Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch described the opening session of the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale as a 'very solid day’s trade', with key figures closely mirroring last year’s results.
“It was a very solid day's trade, I think, to have numbers that are very much in line with last year,” Bowditch said.
“I think the clearance rate's a little bit up on last year, so it will only continue to improve overnight. We had 62 six figure weanlings on the day, it was almost a mirror image of last year. We just had a few more withdrawals and a few less horses catalogued - so we're delighted.
"The vendors here that brought quality lots were well supported by buyers. I understand the vetting was up on last year - so there was great demand.
"There was a good amount of end users here and obviously the traders were here in force. I think both of those markets were strong and complemented each other," Bowditch added. "It was a really solid market."
Bowditch said demand remained strong throughout the session, highlighted by active inspections and competitive bidding across the market.
“I thought vetting was up on last year, from what I can gather. So there was a great demand here, and I think at different times today, there was a really good atmosphere and some really, really strong, solid bidding and good competition.”

Baystone Farm happy to jump aboard the Home Affairs train
As expected, the progeny of Home Affairs were in hot demand throughout the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale, with the first-season sire producing the sale-topper as Lot 251 sold for $680,000 to Stefan Pardi of SP Bloodstock (Aust) Pty Ltd from the Coolmore Stud draft.
Overall with nine weanlings offered and all sold, Home Affairs finished the sale as the leading sire by aggregate, generating $1,950,000 at an average of $216,667.
Among those eager to secure stock by the exciting young stallion was Dean Harvey of Baystone Farm, who admitted he was thrilled to 'get on the Home Affairs train' after purchasing two youngsters during the sale.

Harvey first secured Lot 62, an attractive filly out of the unraced Snitzel mare Mystical Moment (Snitzel), for $210,000 from the Taghadoe Stud draft. The filly boasts a strong pedigree, being a three-quarter-sister to G2 Sandown Guineas winner Serasana (Snitzel) and a half-sister to G2 Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Twilight Royale (Testa Rossa).
He later returned to secure Lot 191, a colt out of Vapid (Dream Ahead {USA}) - a half-sister to G1 winner Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) with a decisive and successful opening bid of $200,000.
“Home Affairs is a very exciting stallion, he looks like he could be a stallion of quite significant force in the future. So I think getting in early now suits us, hopefully he continues in that vein in the next six months for me, which I think he will.” Harvey said.
“There's a lot of them out there that are showing good ability. So I'm happy to get on the Home Affairs train.

“I think, as a whole, the stallion just shows outstanding types, very athletic, good bone and lovely horses. The stallion has started off very well and as I said I think he is a stallion that could be of significant force in the future.”

The lone I Am Invincible weanling proves hot property
The only weanling by champion sire I Am Invincible offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale lived up to his rare billing, with Fernrigg Farm’s Padraig Kelly going to $400,000 to secure the standout colt from Attunga Stud.
Catalogued as Lot 105, the colt carried unique appeal as the sole opportunity for buyers to secure a direct son of the champion stallion at the sale, and competition reflected that demand.
The colt is the first foal out of classy mare Renaissance Woman (Reliable Man {GB}), winner of the G3 Angst Stakes, G3 Ethereal Stakes and Listed Gold Coast Bracelet. The pedigree is further strengthened by a deep page of elite performers, including G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym).

“I thought he was a lovely, athletic colt. He really caught my eye, Brian, Anna and Gab at Attunga, they've been good friends of mine for a long time. I do their x-rays on farm, so I saw this guy a few weeks ago and straight away, he caught my eye when he walked out of the box.” Kelly said.

“I didn't think I'd be able to get him today, I obviously paid good money for him, he will go home to Fernrigg now and go out into the paddock, grow out and hopefully continue to develop and improve and I look forward to re-offering him next year.”
As the lone representative of I Am Invincible in the weanling catalogue, the colt offered buyers a rare opportunity to tap into one of the most dominant sire lines in the country - something Kelly admitted added to the attraction.
“I love the stallion, and the colt has a massive pedigree, being the mares first foal, he's very impressive and a good size for a first foal.
“The dam was a very impressive race mare, she performed in a lot of good group races.”

Kelly also spoke glowingly about the influence of I Am Invincible, whose impact now extends beyond his own racetrack stars into the next generation of stallions.
“He's a super sire, he has been for a number of years, he is now a sire of sires with Home Affairs. I love that sire line, the Mitchells have been very fortunate to have that stallion and he’s still throwing out fantastic race horses.”
McGrath continues strong buying run
Shane McGrath has been one of the busiest buyers throughout the 2026 sales season across both yearling and weanling levels, operating under his Shane McGrath Bloodstock banner and often in partnership with trainer Clinton McDonald.
That trend of purchasing continued on Sunday, with McGrath purchasing three weanlings under his sole banner for a combined $410,000, while also securing Lot 242 - A Farnan colt in conjunction with James Bester Bloodstock for $180,000.
The highest-priced purchase came early in the session when McGrath secured Lot 31, an athletic colt by Toronado (Ire) out of Love Explodes (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), for $230,000.
The colt is out of a winner over 2050 metres in Great Britain and is a half-brother to Listed Warrnambool Cup winner Furrion (GB) (Camelot {GB}).
A proven fan of Toronado (Ire), McGrath said the colt offered a range of options moving forward, whether that be reoffering as a yearling, heading toward a ready-to-run sale, or trading later on.
“He's (Toronado) been a lucky stallion for us. He's obviously a well-established sire in Hong Kong. He's got domestic appeal as well, I really like this colt, I thought he was a good mover, nice and early in the sale, get in and get the job done and be home for dinner.”

When discussing future plans, McGrath said flexibility remained key.
“I'll take him home, back to my farm in Hawthorne Lane. I'll grow him out, we'll have a look at him in the spring time. He's a horse that could come back to Easter, or we could ready-to-run him or trade him when I'm ready to run him and trade him.
“I think with the stallion, you've got plenty of options, he's a lovely colt, and if he grows out the way I think he will, we could do well off him.”
Ciaran ‘Flash’ Conroy and Charles Shanahan combine early
Earlier this year at the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Ireland-based Charles Shanahan made his first appearance at the top end of the Australian market, purchasing a Wootton Bassett (GB) colt in partnership with Tom Magnier.
Shanahan returned for the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale and wasted little time making his presence felt alongside Ciaran ‘Flash’ Conroy of Glenvale Stud, bringing an international flavour to the buying bench.

The pair first secured Lot 2, an Anamoe filly out of Kapralova (USA) (War Front {USA}), for $180,000. The filly is out of an unraced mare with a strong international pedigree.
They later added Lot 65, a Stay Inside colt out of the five-time-winning Zoustar mare Never Second, for $220,000.

“We have purchased two very nice horses nice and early in the sale, to hopefully get some value,” Conroy said.

“The boys down here say that the stallion (Stay Inside) is doing very well and promising, so that's hopefully going to continue and his stock keep getting more valuable.
“We do like going for the exciting young stallions and the Anamoe is in the same boat, but it’s nice to be down here in Australia buying nice horses.”

When asked about future plans for the pair, Conroy indicated both youngsters would likely be reoffered as yearlings.
“They will be coming to a yearling sale, hopefully they grow out well, develop well and we will see how we go.”
