Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale: Five things we learned on Day 2

13 min read
Stiff competition at all levels resulted in lifts to both the median and the clearance rate at the end of the second day of the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. Valuable pregnancies to Extreme Choice were the stars of the show, with Yulong going to $2.05 million to secure young Hellbent mare Miss Hellfire in foal to him on her maiden cover.

At A Glance:

Clearance across both days of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale improved to 81% (77%), while the aggregate decreased to $67,009,500, below 2025 ($88.3 million) and 2024 ($97.6 million). Across both days, 308 horses were traded, down from 356 in 2025 and 472 in 2024.

The average was down to $217,563 ($248,088), while the median lifted in 2026 to $105,000 ($90,000).

In 2026, 10 lots sold for $1 million or more, down from 24 last year and from 15 in 2024.

The top lot on day 2 was Miss Hellfire (Hellbent), in foal to Extreme Choice, who sold for $2.05 million and was bought by Sheng Geng of China.

Top Buyers: Sheng Geng was the sale’s top buyer by gross, spending $7.285 million on seven lots across the two day sale. Katsumi Yoshida was the leading buyer by average with the three mares at an average of $1.33 million.

Top Vendors: Newgate Consignment headed the vendors by aggregate, selling 44 lots for $18.275 million. By average (two or more sold), Attunga Stud finished the sale with 11 lots sold for an average of $487,955.

Top Sires: Snitzel led the stallions by gross with $6 million from 24 lots. Proisir topped the averages chart with two sold at an average of $1.43 million. Mares in foal to Anamoe topped the covering sires by gross tally with six mares making $3.365 million. By average (2 or more sold), mares in foal to Extreme Choice led at an average of $1.675 million for two lots.

#1. Extreme prices for Extreme pregnancies

Only three mares were to be offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale in foal to Newgate Farm’s statistical freak Extreme Choice, and it was Sheng Geng signing on behalf of Yulong for two of them for a combined figure of over $3 million, resulting in an average not too dissimilar to what the stallion’s yearlings achieved at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Newgate Consignment offered all three, and Lot 607 - Miss Hellfire (Hellbent), a Group-performed half-sister to Listed Woodlands Stakes winner Xtremetime (Extreme Choice) - was first through the ring, with the winning bid landing at $2.05 million.

“She was a beautiful mare, a very attractive mare, and Extreme Choice has already worked with the family, so hopefully she leaves a yearling that looks as good as good as herself,” said Yulong CEO Sam Fairgray. “I’m sure it will head for a yearling sale and hopefully go well.”

“Hopefully she (Miss Hellfire) leaves a yearling that looks as good as good as herself.” - Sam Fairgray

The odds are well in Yulong’s favour, given the $1.56 million average achieved for his nine yearlings at Easter. Extreme Choice has achieved an average of $858,750 across the 2026 yearling sales so far, and has just four more to go through the ring in next week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale.

“I think when they’re rare commodities like that, they’re hard to get,” Fairgray continued. “Obviously a lot of breeders want to try and get a mare in-foal to him, and you’ve really got to be able to go to the peak to secure them. Her being such a good-looking mare was a key to it as well.”

“You’ve really got to be able to go to the peak to secure them (progeny of Extreme Choice).” - Sam Fairgray

Almost 100 lots later, Lot 722 - Amen Corner (I Am Invincible), a daughter of multiple Group winner Augusta Proud (More Than Ready {USA}) - was knocked down to the same purchasers for $1.3 million.

“Once the foals are born we’ll assess and see what we do, but at this stage I think we’ll try and offer them back into the marketplace,” Fairgray said on the intention with the foals purchased in utero. “Obviously we can put a reserve on them in the marketplace to what we think their value at the time and see how we go.

“He’s obviously a great stallion and his sire sons at stud have started really well, so it makes sense to get as many of them as you possibly can. We’ve got Devil Night going to stud and we’ve got a couple of 2-year-olds and yearlings by him, so hopefully we can get another Group 1-winning son of his to come through.”

The seven-figure sales contributed to another stellar sale for Newgate Consignment, who consigned four of the 10 top-priced lots in the entire sale, and three of the five top broodmares offered on the second day of selling. They finished the sale as the leading vendors by aggregate yet again, with a final gross of $18,275,000, accounting for 27% of the sale's total turnover.

The final mare in foal to Extreme Choice, Complicit (USA) (Blame {USA}) passed in with a reserve of $800,000.

#2. Ritchie goes big to boost Bangaloe's broodmare band

After securing a stallion share in Extreme Choice on Tuesday for $735,000, Bangaloe Stud’s Julia Ritchie was back in action on Wednesday to reinvest in her broodmare band. After being the underbidder on both Miss Hellfire and Stretan Angel (Harry Angel {Ire}) over the two-day sale, she secured one high on her list in Lot 687, Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt), for $850,000.

A Group 3 winner with multiple further Group placings to her credit, Thalassophile comes from a family thick with black-type. Her dam is a half-sister to four stakes winners, headed up by Champion Sprinter Miler Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad), as well as the dams of South African Group 2 winner Ektifaa (More Than Ready {USA}) and G3 South Australian Fillies Classic winner Okahu Bay (Flying Spur).

Offered by Newgate Consignment on behalf of Go Bloodstock, the 7-year-old is carrying her first foal to Champion First Season Sire Ole Kirk on a mid September cover.

“Finally the bride, not a bridesmaid, thank God,” said Ritchie, who maintains a band of around 25 at Bangaloe Stud. “I was looking for some nice quality mares. I've been investing in some really lovely stallion breeding rights - I was very fortunate to get the Extreme Choice yesterday - and I’m looking to buy more mares to enhance that purchase.”

“I've been investing in some really lovely stallion breeding rights and I’m looking to buy more mares to enhance that purchase.” - Julia Ritchie

Ritchie was drawn to Thalassophile’s high quality form; the mare’s six victories also include a Listed win, and she chalked up seven stakes placings en route to over $870,000 in prize money.

“You still like to see a mare that's got good black-type somewhere in its form,” she said. “I think, as a type, she'll let down into a nice mare, she's still in the early stages, but she has a lot of upside and the family was great as well.”

The Ole Kirk pregnancy was an added bonus, as Ritchie is a shareholder in the Vinery Stud resident, as well as being one of the main owners in Everest victor Yes Yes Yes.

“I’m happy with that,” she added. “I think we’re looking for him to do more this season with some of his progeny, but he's throwing lovely stock.”

#3. Lime Country restocking after successful sale season

A superb Inglis Chairman’s Sale for Lime Country Thoroughbreds gave the Hunter Valley-based operation and their broodmare partnership plenty of ammunition to spend at the Gold Coast this week, and the team had to wait until late in the day on Wednesday to secure their top seed.

In the closing hour of the sale, Lime Country emerged as the top bidders on Lot 818, winning Dawn Approach (Ire) mare Skagerrak, who they purchased for $700,000. The 10-year-old was offered by Newgate Consignment in foal to I Am Invincible on behalf of Segenhoe Stud. She is a half-sister to Hanseatic and descends from prolific producer Scandinavia (Snippets), granddam of Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).

“We have been trying all day,” said Lime Country’s Jo Griffin, acknowledging the tough competition at the sale’s top end. “We understand that the yearling is going well. She obviously leaves a good type.”

“She (Skagerrak) obviously leaves a good type.” - Jo Griffin

Skagerrak’s first foal Krakarib (Ribchester {Ire}) won the G3 Maribyrnong Plate in 2022, and she has a Snitzel yearling filly who has been retained by her breeder.

“She has come from Segenhoe and I know she has been well cared for and well looked after,” Griffin said. “She’ll join our broodmare partnership. You always want them for less than you get them for, but with Vinnie and an early cover, and a quality family, fingers crossed (for what she produces).”

Lime Country signed for eight lots in total across the two days of the sale, also buying mares in foal to Shinzo and Storm Boy as well as spending $240,000 to acquire Mimi’s (Extreme Choice), a half-sister to young Newgate stallion King’s Gambit.

They sold 10 mares at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale earlier in the month, where their top lot was Moldova (Snitzel), dam of Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), who made $1 million to the bid of Yulong while in foal to Home Affairs.

It has been an exceptional sales season in general for the operation, who offered the sale-topping $3 million Extreme Choice colt out of Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau) at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale on behalf of his breeders, as well as selling the joint highest priced Anamoe filly to date for $800,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January.

#4. Switzerland reigns supreme in first season sire battle

The Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale has long offered the first opportunity to buy mares in foal to the latest crop of stallions to retire to stud, and the 2026 sale features first pregnancies for 13 individual young sires. The one in hottest demand was Coolmore Stud’s G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes victor Switzerland, who covered a book of 195 mares in his first season at stud and averaged $310,000 for his first pregnancies.

Nine of those mares went through the ring on Tuesday, and five were purchased for an aggregate of $1.55 million, with the top lot being Lot 803, I’m The Boss Of Me (USA) (Midshipman {USA}), who was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $560,000. The multiple stakes placegetter was offered by Amarina Farm.

“She’s a mare that we just fell in love with when we saw her early in the week,” Harron said, commenting that the mare’s outcross pedigree allowed a lot of flexibility for potential matings. The three most expensive mares in foal to Switzerland all made more than the next most popular first season sire.

Darley’s four-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding came closest to matching Switzerland’s aggregate while achieving full clearance with the eight mares offered in foal to him on Wednesday, for a gross of $1.48 million. Astute Bloodstock (FBAA) and Cressfield paid $340,000 to secure Group 3-winning Fashion Shoot (NZ) (Savabeel) from the draft of Newgate Consignment.

Broadsiding covered 160 mares in his first season at stud and averaged $185,000 for the mares offered, which is almost three times his service fee.

#5. Grenville make shrewd investment into St Gotthard’s family

Ms Bad Behavior (Can) (Blame {USA}) has built a reputation for being a profitable broodmare both in the sales ring and on the track, with her fourth yearling making a seven-figure sum at the Inglis Easter sale back in March and her G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes-winning son Switzerland making a splash with his first in-foal mares.

The Arrowfield Stud resident is now the dam of two stakes winners, after $2.7 million yearling St Gotthard (Snitzel) swept to victory in the G3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic, and on Wednesday, Grenville Stud shrewdly found a cheaper way into the family when purchasing her younger sister Magical Elegance (Can) (Good Magic {USA}) at the Gold Coast.

Presented as Lot 597 by Yarraman Park Stud, the Northern Hemisphere 5-year-old was offered in foal to Anamoe and was knocked down to the Tasmanian nursery for $340,000. Anamoe’s first yearlings sold for up to $1.1 million on the sales circuit this year, and with the nine-time Group 1 winner entering his fourth season at stud at a fee of $110,000 (inc GST), the investment looks like a shrewd one.

A winner for Annabel and Rob Archibald, Magical Elegance can also count the Listed winners One Bad Boy (Can) (Twirling Candy {USA}) and Blessed Truly (Can) (Souper Speedy {USA}) amongst her siblings. Blessed Truly is also in Australia and delivered her maiden foal, a colt by Too Darn Hot (GB), in 2025 before visiting Farnan.

Ms Bad Behavior delivered her fifth and final colt by Snitzel in the spring, and visited Arrowfield’s heir apparent The Autumn Sun for the first time in November.

Bowditch ‘extremely satisfied’ with sale results

With a smaller cohort going through the ring at this year’s sale, a drop to the aggregate was anticipated. This did come to pass, but at the same time, the sale saw a lift to two vital statistics versus last year’s results; both the clearance and median rose, with the former expected to continue its rise over the coming days.

“I'm extremely satisfied,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “Coming into today, I was wondering where we would land with the mares-in-foal. I thought that could have been more volatile than what it was.

Barry Bowditch | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“I thought it was a genuine market again to clear 81% overall and to still average close to $220,000 and have a gross of $67 million. The median of $107,500 is up on last year. I felt that they were really solid numbers and it was pleasing that there was thirst all the way through to the end for the mares-in-foal.”

Bowditch highlighted how 16 mares offered in foal made $500,000 or more, which was a great result for the sale.

“When a quality mare walked in, there was plenty of competition and a willingness to participate.” - Barry Bowditch

“When a quality mare walked in, there was plenty of competition and a willingness to participate,” he said. “It is hard to compare (statistics each year) but the numbers we ended up with is above the expectations of what we thought we could achieve leading into the sale.”

The Magic Millions team’s attention now shifts to the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale, which commences on Monday, June 1.

“The opportunities are always there for buyers at the National Yearling Sale and this is a sale that always produces quality racehorses at good value prices,” Bowditch said. “I know there's a very good line up of youngsters on the way.”
