Inglis Great Southern Sale: Five things we learned on Day 2

13 min read
On the second day of the 2026 Inglis Great Southern Sale, the second crop of Horse Of The Year Anamoe were the stars of the show, with the spotlight dominated by the half-sister to Group 1 winners Femminile and Fireball Miss. The filly matched the sale's historic high water mark when selling for $825,000, reflecting the roaring trade on Day 2.

At A Glance:

Clearance across the Inglis Great Southern Sale dropped slightly to 78% (79%), while the aggregate increased to $15,289,500, ahead of 2025 ($10 million) and 2024 ($11.9 million). Across the whole sale, 295 horses were traded, up from 221 in 2025 and 271 in 2024.

The average lifted to $51,829 ($45,357), while the median lifted in 2026 to $25,000 ($20,000).

Across both days, 55 lots sold for $100,000 or more, up from 27 last year.

The top lot on Day 2 was the Anamoe half-sister to Group 1 winners Femminile (Dundeel {NZ}) and Fireball Miss (Bivouac) who made $825,000. She was sold by Three Bridges Farm and bought by Yulong.

Top Buyers: Yulong’s sole purchase of the sale topper made them the sale’s top buyer by gross. Lyndhurst Farm was the leading buyer by average, buying three weanlings at an average of $188,333.

Top Vendors: Burnewang North Pastoral headed the vendors by aggregate, selling 17 lots for $2.38 million. Armidale Stud finished the sale as the leading vendor by average (two or more sold) for the day at $201,250 across four lots sold.

Top Sires: Anamoe led the stallions by gross with the sale topper and a total to three weanlings sold for an aggregate of $1.5 million. He also topped the averages chart with an average of $501,667.

#1. Femme Fireball’s Anamoe returns on investment

It’s hard enough to buy up and coming relations to one Group 1 winner, but how many horses that have come on the market in 2026 can claim to be the half to two?

Lot 406, a daughter of Darley's Horse Of The Year Anamoe, can lay claim to the latter, having been already a half-sister to G1 Southern Australian Derby winner Femminile (Dundeel {NZ}) when the catalogue went to print. The page received a considerable boost just last week when another half-sister Fireball Miss (Bivouac) hurtled home to claim the G1 Queensland Oaks. Attracting attention from every corner of the buying bench, the filly was knocked down to Yulong for $825,000 - equalling the sale's record price set in 2023.

Dam Femme Fireball (Pierro) has turned into a particularly canny purchase for her connections; Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) and Paul Willetts Bloodstock sourced the mare for $900,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, with Lot 406 in utero, on behalf of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds and Peter Murray. The former offered the daughter of Anamoe at this week’s Inglis Great Southern Sale.

"To get these results is what you dream of," Three Bridges’ Toby Liston said. "We thought we had the right product, we brought her to Inglis and she shone. You get nervous when you’ve got such a quality animal and obviously there were multiple bidders up to $600,000 and $700,000. Everybody wanted her which is marvellous.

"To get these results is what you dream of." - Toby Liston

"She’s obviously smashed the record for a weanling sold this year and why wouldn’t she, she’s such a beauty.’"

It is a predictably exciting update for a mare to double her tally of top level winners - and right before a sale as well - and in doing so, she has almost entirely wiped out her purchase price with one foal sale.

"So exciting," said Murray. "(I) can’t really believe it to be honest, I’m kind of speechless. It was amazing, really. You get caught up in the moment and you don’t know which way the bids are coming because they’re coming from online, from the other end of the room. The auctioneer (Will Gardner) was fantastic, it was great theatre.

"I’d like to also thank Inglis, they’ve been fantastic getting the right buyers together, they’re very supportive and we’re very appreciative."

Anamoe has enjoyed a particularly strong weanling sale for his second crop, which has seen him pip Home Affairs by just $5000 for the top spot by sire aggregate, and also finish well in front with an average of $501,667 for his three weanlings sold. His first crop are just weeks away from turning two and the final weanling sale of the Australian season has only added to the anticipation.

#2. King’s Gambit colt seals Armidale’s clean sweep

Armidale Stud came to the Inglis Great Southern Sale with just four foals to sell, and all four were sufficiently popular with the market that the Tasmanian-based stud finished the sale as leading vendors by average. They sold the top lot on Day 1, a Home Affairs colt who was bought by James Carolan for $330,000, aiding their achievement of a $201,250 average.

Of their two lots offered late on Friday afternoon, both sold for in excess of $200,000; Blue Gum Farm and Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) were attracted by Lot 410, a son of King’s Gambit, enough to pay $210,000 for him and Infinity Thoroughbreds And Shane's Team outlaid $200,000 for Lot 421, a son of Toronado (Ire).

The former, from the first crop of Newgate Farm’s son of I Am Invincible, was popular with good reason, being a half-brother to the undefeated Aristopolos (St Mark’s Basilica {Fr}), whose six wins this season include two at Listed level and the $85,000 Magic Millions Tasmania 2YO Classic. Trained by leading Tasmanian conditioner John Blacker, the colt has amassed over $358,000 in prize money and bonuses in his first season of racing.

It is the second best price achieved for a foal by King’s Gambit, who enters his third season at stud at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST). Newgate’s own Jim Carey, a renowned pinhooker, shelled out $265,000 for another first crop son of the sire at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale.

Dam Flying Krupt (Krupt) was Listed-performed herself as well as a five-time winner in Victoria and South Australia before being brought across the water to begin her breeding career. After several years being sent back to the mainland for her covers, Flying Krupt visited first season Tasmanian sire Bodyguard in 2025.

#3. Anamoe colt bewitches bidders on Day 2

He had been touted as one of the standout stars of Burnewang North Pastoral’s draft, and Lot 276 dazzled in the ring as promised, with the bidding soaring to $480,000 before the hammer came down. SP Bloodstock signed the docket in partnership with Grenville Stud and Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA).

"I loved him, I just wanted to have him," said SP Bloodstock's Stefan Pardi. "On my notes, I just had ‘Love him. Have to take home.’

"On my notes, I just had ‘Love him. Have to take home.’" - Stefan Pardi

"He’s all class, a well-bodied colt, beautiful head and I’m leaning toward Inglis Easter with him and he’ll be a standout there as well."

The colt is the fourth foal out of metropolitan winner Witches (Lonhro), a three-quarter-sister to G3 Eclipse Stakes winner Whiskey Neat (Denman), as well as G2 Sapphire Stakes winner Renaissance, Group 2-winning sire Sessions, and Listed-winning Haunted (Lonhro). Witches’s two foals to race are both winners, headlined by Listed Maribyrnong Trial placegetter Aditi (Exceed And Excel).

Aditi had been another high flying weanling sale for the mare and the farm when walking through the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale ring in 2021, selling to Rosemont Stud for $310,000.

The sale was the highlight lot on Day 2 for Burnewang North, but their entire draft sustained the momentum from the first day of selling that saw them finish the sale as the leading vendor by aggregate, selling 17 weanlings for a total of $2,387,000 - almost $1 million more than the runners up - and the third best average across vendors in the sale, achieving an average of $140,412.

"It’s been the busiest sale that we’ve done," Burnewang’s Emma Todd said. "We’ve done at least 1800 individual parades, this colt alone ended up doing 160 parades himself so to have handled that the way he did is just a credit to the type of horse that he is."

"Special mention must go to Catherine Hains, Aaron and Emma Todd, Tanya Edwards and the entire Burnewang North team, to sell all 17 weanlings offered is a tremendous achievement," said Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch.

"This horse has been an absolute star all week," Todd added. "What we liked about him most was his temperament, he’s a lovely horse to look at but he just makes you happy when you work with him, and we’re just so proud of the way he handled himself."

"He’s (Lot 276) a lovely horse to look at but he just makes you happy when you work with him." - Emma Todd

Pardi also praised Burnewang's preparation of the colt, saying, "Burnewang North do an outstanding job. This colt was just so chilled, so relaxed. He got pulled out for inspections so many times, even a few times I was there I had to wait in line to inspect him. But he was just always relaxed and that’s a very good temperament to take to a sale, and end users will have a look at that when he’s a yearling."

#4. First Southern Hemisphere Chaldean weanling makes six figures

Cambridge Stud-based shuttler Chaldean (GB) saw his first foals arrive in New Zealand last spring, and the first of those to go under the hammer in the Southern Hemisphere made an impression on the buyers at the Oaklands complex on Friday. Lot 218, a filly offered by Burnewang North Pastoral, was knocked down to Scott Seamer for $180,000.

The filly is the first foal of Summerinthecity (Too Darn Hot {GB}), an unraced half-sister to top New Zealand 2YO Need I Say More - Spirited Express (HK) (No Nay Never {USA}), who won six stakes races - five at Group level - before his export to Hong Kong, where he has been a winner and placed at Group 3 level.

Second dam Bo Bardi (Fastnet Rock) is a daughter of Listed-winning middle distance mare Our Golden Dream (USA) (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}).

Chaldean has made a flying start to his sales career in the Northern Hemisphere, with 33 members of his first crop going under the hammer in 2025 and all 33 selling, achieving an average equivalent to $214,978. A filly out of You Look So Good (GB) (Excellent Art {GB}) was his best sales ring performer, selling at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 240,000 gns (AU$510,994).

Two weanlings - Lot 3 and Lot 54 - by the son of Frankel (GB) Chaldean will be offered at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale on June 25.

#5. So You Think filly delights the enterprising Miller

Western Australian trainer Simon Miller knows a thing or two about buying a top flight racehorse as a weanling - the latest of his patient successes has been Group 2-winning Generosity (Divine Prophet), who was identified for purchase last year by B2B Thoroughbreds and brought to Chris Waller’s stable on the hunt for riches on the eastern seaboard. Miller has been back over east again in 2026 and picked up a jewel on Day 2 of the Inglis Great Southern Sale in the form of Lot 360, a daughter of So You Think (NZ).

Miller has been keen to secure offspring of the late Coolmore resident for some time, and went to $180,000 to take home the filly offered by Blue Gum Farm.

“I’ve always wanted to buy a So You Think filly,” said Miller. “It looks like she will sprint. It was funny actually, she was the second horse I looked at on the complex when I started inspecting, so that set the benchmark of the standard I was trying to chase with the other ones.

"She (Lot 360) was the second horse I looked at on the complex when I started inspecting, so that set the benchmark of the standard I was trying to chase with the other ones." - Simon Miller

“So I got lucky. I fell in love with her and she fell into our price bracket.”

The filly’s dam Chit Chat (Anabaa {USA}) was a four-time winner herself out to the mile, and has produced four winners to date, including dual winning 3-year-old Go Left (So You Think {NZ}). She is a daughter of New Zealand Champion Stayer Upsetthym (NZ) (Rhythm {USA}).

Paul Moroney was amongst the underbidders who couldn’t quite match the depth of Miller and his weanling syndicate’s pockets.

“Probably being an end user really helps as I can throw a few extra bids in,” Miller said. “It’s always good when you are clashing with someone who has got a good eye. I was in the right spot at the right time. We had bought a few already, but I was desperate to get this one.

"We had bought a few already, but I was desperate to get this one." - Simon Miller

“She will come back to the Wild West and hopefully we can get some black-type in her. It's just an interesting pedigree and a family that hopefully will be active in the next 12 months while we're eating grass, so hopefully there's some pedigree upgrades.”

The filly was the most expensive lot bought at the sale by Miller, who signed the docket on six lots. Although based in Western Australia, the Victorian native appreciates getting back to his home state for the Great Southern Sale.

“It’s a great sale for me,” he said. “I come home and see family and friends, there’s a good bit of social activity while I’m inspecting horses.”

'Phenomenal' conclusion to Inglis breeding stock sales series

Reflecting on a sale that blew the 2025 figures out of the water, Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch described the rising crescendo of the 2026 Inglis breeding stock sale series as “phenomenal”.

A larger 2026 catalogue understandably led to a higher gross for the Inglis Great Southern Sale, with a $4.2 million increase reflecting an additional 74 horses sold, but the sale’s highlight metrics were the average and median, which saw growth of 16% and 14% on last year’s figures.

“When you look back and reflect, to gross almost $35 million for our weanling sales series is really incredible,” said Hutch. “Especially when you consider the Magic Millions Weanling Sale grossed $16,149,500, so our sales have more than doubled that.

"When you look back and reflect, to gross almost $35 million for our weanling sales series is really incredible." - Sebastian Hutch

“For context, as recently as 2019, our weanling sales series was over $10.2 million behind that of Magic Millions in terms of turnover, so thank you to all vendors for working with us to help to turn that around.

“Our team has worked exceptionally hard to generate momentum behind our weanling sales series and I’m confident the drive and passion within our team will see us continue to progress the standard of service that we offer our clients through the balance of the year and into 2027.

“These past two days at Oaklands have been hugely rewarding for a large number of people and we are incredibly grateful for the support that we have been afforded by our buyers and, in particular, our vendors.”
