Looking Ahead - June 21

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Consistent types by Hellbent and Spirit Of Boom chase success across Australia on Sunday.

Southside Cranbourne, Race 1, 11.30am AEST, Ladbrokes Popular SRM 3YO Maiden Plate, $42,500, 1600m

Determinato, 3-year-old gelding (Hellbent x Sognani {Magic Albert})

The Dominic Sutton-trained Determinato (Hellbent) chases maiden success at Cranbourne on Sunday over 1600-metres. The promising gelding has ran four placings in his six career starts and looks ready to break through.

Determinato is out of the dual winner Sognani (Magic Albert), who has already left three winners at stud, including the Group 2 winning 2-year-old filly Kristilli (Hellbent), and the two-time winner Anarita (Hellbent).

This is also the extended family of the G1 Canterbury Stakes winner Lady Laguna (Overshare).

Sognani, in recent years, has left a 2-year-old gelding named Trackhawk (Hellbent), a yearling filly by Hellbent, a weanling colt by I Am Invincible, and was served by Brave Smash (Jpn) last spring.

Determinato was purchased for $140,000 by McKeever Bloodstock and Dom Sutton Racing from the Yarraman Park Stud draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Sunshine Coast, Race 5, 2.20pm AEST, Nick & Gerry Clatworthy QTIS 2YO Handicap, $50,000, 1000m

On The Clock, 2-year-old gelding (Spirit Of Boom x Chezblack {Foxwedge})

The Liam Birchley-trained On The Clock (Spirit Of Boom) chases his second win at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday over 1000 metres.

He was a dominant winner by over seven lengths at Toowoomba in late February, and has ran two solid seconds at Eagle Farm and at Mackay at his last two starts.

On The Clock is the first and sadly the only foal out of the nine-time winner Chezblack (Foxwedge), she is out of the multiple Group 1 placed Glowlamp (Encosta De Lago). This is also the extended family of the outstanding racehorse and successful sire Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire).

On The Clock was purchased by Bloodstock Solutions for $120,000 from the Kenmore Lodge draft at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Looking Back:

Coniston (NZ) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) - Was scratched from his race at Ellerslie, he will keep for another day.

Helvecchio (Castelvecchio) - Was an eye-catching effort at Flemington when running fifth at big odds. He is one to follow as a 3-year-old over ground.

Nitro (Deep Field) - Disappointed running fifth at Randwick.
