Stable Tours: Who amongst the Waterhouse-Bott stable are Golden Rose hopefuls?

6 min read
In this instalment of Stable Tours, TTR catches up with Adrian Bott to fill us in on where the stars of Tulloch Lodge are aimed this spring. The Waterhouse-Bott team will have several 3-year-olds on a G1 Golden Rose Stakes path and Sir Delius is out to firm his stallion credentials with a G1 Cox Plate.

3-year-olds

“She's nominated to run this Saturday in the Silver Shadow Stakes. She will likely run in the first two legs of the Princess Series over the 1200-metre trips. At this stage, we think we will most likely keep her to the sprint trips, but we may test her over 1400 metres in the Tea Rose Stakes. Her first two runs will dictate whether she steps up in trip or stays sprinting.

“If we decide to keep her sprinting, we will obviously take her down to Melbourne at some point then.”

Shiki, 3-year-old filly (Too Darn Hot {GB} x Jest Excel {Exceed And Excel})

“Shiki ran first up on Saturday in the Quezette and she ran well. We will just stick to the sprint trips for her, so she will remain down in Melbourne for now. We will be targeting the 3-year-old fillies’ races, and keep her to short trips and her own sex.”

Revengeance, 3-year-old gelding (Hellbent x Havazu (NZ) {Sacred Falls {NZ}})

“He resumes in the San Domenico Stakes a week on Saturday. He has had a while off since he won the Golden Gift and he has come back well. I think he is going to be most effective over 1400 metres to a mile, so he is going through a Golden Rose, potentially Guineas, style of campaign.”

Miss Chanel, 3-year-old filly (Tagaloa x Talented {Snitzel})

“She had a very busy time as a 2-year-old, so we just gave her a decent break. She is back in work now, but she is probably only going to pop up at the end of the carnival. We will find her a race down in Melbourne over Cup Week and then she might be prepared for the Magic Millions raceday in January.”

“He ran on Saturday in the Rosebud and he ran well. We probably just want to try and find a maiden for him to win and give himself a bit of confidence, and then we will see where he is best placed off the back of that. He is just finding a few excuses at present.”

“He is due to resume soon. He's had a couple of trials, and he has just had a small setback, so we will potentially see him in about two weeks time in the San Domenico as well. He is also going to be heading towards the Golden Rose initially, although I do think he might get out a little further as well.

“But the Golden Rose is his initial aim and it is a good race to decide where he is best aimed going forward. We are still learning more about him, with him having been away for so long.”

“She runs on Saturday in the Silver Shadow as well. She's a Flight Stakes filly. I think she will really appreciate getting out to a 1600-metre trip. That may open a few more options to take her down to Melbourne later in the spring as well.”

Plagiarism, 3-year-old gelding (Written By x Profiterole {Snitzel})

“Plagiarism will probably go to the Up and Coming Stakes off of his third place on Saturday. He is probably a tier below those real top 3-year-olds, so he will probably take a path through races like the Callander-Presnell and similar races.”

Savagram (NZ), 3-year-old colt (Savabeel x Gram (NZ) {O’Reilly {NZ}})

“Savagram won a nice race at Canterbury during the week. He will most likely now head down a Spring Champion Stakes path.”

Spain, 3-year-old colt (Snitzel x Lagertha (Chi) {Scat Daddy {USA}})

“Spain ran well in Adelaide last preparation, coming second in the Sires’ Produce Stakes down there. He has trialled up nicely at the end of last week and will likely also head to the Spring Champion.”

4-year-olds

Tomato Toastie, 4-year-old mare (Too Darn Hot (GB) x Al Naifa {Redoute’s Choice})

“She freshened up nicely on Queensland, and she probably finds a nice race over the carnival in that 1400 to 1600-metre range, and we will whether she could develop into an Invitation style of mare. I think she's still got some good improvement to come.”

Stardom, 4-year-old mare (Zoustar x Diddums {Snitzel})

“She resumes in the Toy Show Quality on Saturday, and we will see how she measures up to that calibre of mare to decide where she goes next.”

Shangri La Boy, 4-year-old gelding (Pierro x Pelican (NZ) {Fastnet Rock})

“He has only just come back into work, so we won’t see him until the back end of the spring. His program is still quite open at the moment.”

Older horses

Sir Delius (GB), 6-year-old entire (Frankel {GB} x Whatami (GB) {Daylami {Ire}})

“He is on a Cox Plate this spring and will resume in the Makybe Diva Stakes on September 12. Then he will likely head to the Turnbull Stakes that he won last year, then into the Cox Plate. Then we will likely see him in a 2000-metre race on Champions Day.

“If all things are going well, there's some international options open for him if that is what the ownership group decide to do with him.”

Vauban (Fr), 9-year-old gelding (Galiway (GB) x Waldfest (GB) {Hurricane Run {Ire}})

“He’s come back really well. We haven’t made our mind up yet on a Melbourne Cup campaign with him, or not. He has had a few tries now. The Caulfield Cup might be more his preference this time.”

Campaldino (NZ), 6-year-old gelding (Ghibellines x Zuzana (NZ) {Shocking})

“He has had two trials back in now and is shaping up to be a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup horse this time in.”
