4 min read
In this instalment of Stable Tours, TTR catches up with John Thompson to take a look at his team ahead of an exciting spring. His stable features several proven campaigners, alongside a number of promising 3-year-olds who showed plenty of potential last season and could be ones to watch as they step up in their 3-year-old campaigns.

Older horses

El Castello, 5-year-old gelding (Castelvecchio x Word Games {Fastnet Rock})

“El Castello really needed gelding, we actually gelded him in work which I don’t often do and it just didn’t work.

“We put him out for a spell and he spelled very well, we purposely put him in a paddock with lots of horses and just let him be a horse.

“He has come back with a good attitude, he trials on Friday and potentially we may look at a race like the Tramway for him first up.

Clear Proof, 5-year-old gelding (Justify (USA) x Crystal Fountain (NZ) {Stravinsky {USA}})

“Clear Proof has been racing well. He's a similar horse to El Castello in terms of he was left a colt a bit long, since being gelded he has come back and just needed a bit of racing.

“He has been super consistent and really trying hard. He's in good form and runs again on Saturday.”

Melanite, 4-year-old gelding (Dirty Work x Caesarissa {Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}})

“Melanite is a promising sort of horse. He will go through his grades and I think he is quite progressive.

“He still does a few things wrong in his races, but he has plenty of upside to him.”

Starphistocated, 5-year-old mare (Churchill (Ire) x Starspangled (Ire) {Danehill {USA}})

“Starphistocated is a lovely mare, she runs this Sunday in the Goulburn Cup which is a qualifying race for the Big Dance. Hopefully she can do that, she is going well and I think she's in for a good preparation.”

Motoscafo, 5-year-old mare (Castelvecchio x Jahre {Encosta de Lago})

“Motoscafo has been stepping out over a bit more ground, racing well and looks like she will appreciate stepping up in trip more.

“She is knocking on the door, her run on Saturday was good. It is probably the wrong time of year to have her in, because she doesn't like the wet tracks. I think when she gets back on top of the ground she will be a different horse.”

3-year-olds

Nomadic, 3-year-old gelding (King's Legacy x Sheza Gypsy {Shaft})

“Hopefully he keeps improving as he gets older like his half-sister Sheza Alibi, he raced well as a 2-year-old in good company and it’s the perfect time of the year to be warming up.

“All things going well, I would like to set him on a Spring Champion Stakes path.”

Screen Icon, 3-year-old filly (Nicconi x Screebe {Star Witness})

“Screen Icon ran same great races as a 2-year-old, it was disappointing that she didn’t get in the Slipper, and then I made the mistake of running her again when I shouldn’t have. It was a case of one run too many.

“She has come back well, trialled good, and she runs Saturday in the Silver Shadow and will run through the 3-year-old filly series, the Princess series.”

I'm Relevant, 3-year-old gelding (Written By x Rock And Rose {Fastnet Rock})

“I'm Relevant has just gone out for a spell, he has improved a lot the last couple of runs. He's on that upward spiral and a nice horse that will go through the grades.

“He looks a good prospect for the autumn.”

2-year-olds

Unnamed, 2-year-old filly, (Snitzel x L’Cosmo {Lonhro})

Purchased by John Thompson Racing Pty Ltd for $450,000 from the Silverdale Farm draft at the 2026 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

“I have a lovely filly by Snitzel out of L’Cosmo that I paid $450,000 for at Easter. She is a really nice filly and I think she could go early.

“They just have to be natural early. I enjoy training the early 2-year-olds, when they show a bit of natural talent early, you just have to give them an opportunity.

“It’s a challenge I like, but the 2-year-olds tell you if they are a chance of being early.”
