Soldi shows why Segenhoe was sought after

Yulong’s investment into Segenhoe was once again shown to be a wise investment as the farm produced Wednesday’s Listed Debutant Stakes winner Soldi. The second stakes winner for her dam, Soldi looks to have a bright future.

Tassort filly Soldi was bred and raised by Segenhoe Stud, and her Listed Debutante Stakes victory on Wednesday is yet another demonstration of why Yulong purchased the property. Trained by Ben, Will and JD Hayes, Soldi had to work hard for her victory, being pushed all the way by Yulong-owned colt Royal Press (Alabama Express) with only a tiny margin between the pair on the line.

“She was born and raised here on the farm at Segenhoe. She was always a beautiful foal, very correct, really well put together. She was prepared for the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, where she sold for $310,000,” Brian Clarke, Yulong’s Segenhoe manager, said.

Segenhoe Stud took Soldi to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale where Lindsay Park and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock paid $310,000 for her.

Adding to graduate list from the farm

Soldi adds to a long history of top graduates off the land that is now Yulong Segenhoe. Ninja (Farnan) runs in Saturday’s G1 The Everest having beaten the hot favourite Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress {NZ}) in a recent trial. Group 1-placed Wodeton has recently retired to Newgate Farm.

Recent G3 Vain Stakes-placed Confederation (Wootton Bassett {GB}) looks to join a list of 16 individual Group 1 winners raised on the property in the decade since Clarke has worked there. Horses like Joliestar (Zoustar), King’s Legacy, Merchant Navy, and In Secret (I Am Invincible) have all graced the pastures here. Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) went through Segenhoe Stud’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft in 2019.

“She was a beautiful filly, big, strong, and robust. When you looked at her, you almost thought she was a colt, and looked every bit of a 2-year-old, which she's turned out to be. We're definitely not surprised she's gone on to be a be a stakes winning 2-year-old,” Clarke said.

“Very typical of the mare. She's a very good broodmare, Spurs And Sashes. We bred another stakes winner out of her on the farm, Boston Rocks, and he was a very similar type to her. Both were very strong, short coupled, big hips, good actions. The mare has done a really good job and both were very similar types.”

Segenhoe Bloodstock sold Spurs And Sashes for $2750 to Crompton Bloodstock via Inglis Digital in April 2025.

A half-sister to Listed Village Stakes winner Boston Rocks (Hellbent), whose seven wins have netted connections over $620,000, Soldi is the seventh named foal for five-time winner Spurs And Sashes (Flying Spur). Spurs And Sashes has six winners from as many to race, with 3-year-old filly Pure Design (Pierro) and a foal by Brutal (NZ) her only unraced progeny. Soldi is the only one of Spurs And Sashes’ six winners to win at two.

Spurs And Sashes is a half-sister to G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes winner and G1 Thousand Guineas-placed Sabatini (Street Cry {Ire}), G3 National Stakes winner Vivi Veloce (More Than Ready {USA}) and stakes placed Just Been Lucky (Encosta De Lago). The trio of stakes horses were produced by G3 Mannerism Stakes winner Royal Sash (Royal Academy {USA}).

Adding to Tassort’s good juvenile record

Soldi becomes the fifth stakes winner for Tassort, whose G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Manaal was a winner on debut in the G3 Gimcrack Stakes.

“It’s great to see a stable like Lindsay Park, along with Dean Hawthorne, being happy to see a nicely bred Tassort and be willing to step in and pay $310,000 for her. She’s one of highest priced lots by Tassort, so nice to see their confidence be full vindicated on debut in a stakes race,” Newgate Farm’s Bruce Slade said.

According to Newgate Farm’s website, Soldi is the sixth-top priced Tassort yearling to sell at auction.

“Obviously, she's worth residually much more than they paid for her, but probably more exciting to watch what comes next. If you have a look at that family, it's quite good tough family and they certainly don't go backwards with more time even, so you'd love to think this is the start of a much longer journey, and she’ll give the owners lots of fun.

“The exciting thing for the stallion is that going forward, this is the last crop where he covered at $10,000 and his next three crops coming through were the ones where he's been covering it $35,000.”

Tassort | Standing at Newgate Farm

Tassort opened his account in 2020 at $11,000 inc GST, covering 137 mares. He stayed at that fee for four seasons and was popular each year, before increasing to $38,500 inc GST in 2024. That year resulted in 152 live foals who are currently yearlings, and he covered 149 mares in 2025 with the results arriving now. He stands for $33,000 inc GST for 2026.

“So he’s been getting a lot more mares in the last three years who are stakes performed or stakes producers themselves, and that'll hopefully convert to, and even escalate in terms of his racetrack results in time. That's exciting for the horse.”

The Listed Debutant Stakes has a strong graduate record.

Testa Rossa began his career in the Listed Debutant Stakes, winning his first four in succession including the R.Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic before adding the G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes. He clashed with Redoute’s Choice as a 3-year-old, and was one of the best of his generation, retiring to stud with six Group 1 victories.

Coleman won the G3 Chairman’s Stakes at his next start and now stands his first season at Blue Gum Farm, while King’s Gambit placed in the G1 Golden Slipper and won the G2 Roman Consul Stakes at three. He’s been popular in his first two seasons at Newgate Farm and is currently serving his third book.

Qafila (Not A Single Doubt) returned at three to win the G1 South Australian Derby and G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes. Missrock (Fastnet Rock) added the G3 Percy Stakes later in her juvenile season and won another Listed race as an older mare.

If Soldi goes on with it like some of these other Listed Debutant Stakes winners, her ownership group are set for a big ride over the next couple of years.
