Curtain falls on bubbly Spright’s racing career

Garry Frazer’s stable star Spright (Hinchinbrook) has run her last race with time called on the 5-year-old, who has proved an outstanding investment for all concerned with a Group 1 victory on her CV and career earnings of more than $1.3 million.

The Hawkesbury trainer, who also has a small ownership interest in the quality mare, prepared Spright for six wins and 10 placings with success in this season’s G1 Robert Sangster S. at Morphettville her career highlight.

Spright will now head to the broodmare paddock and a date with Widden Stud's star stallion Zoustar in the spring.

“I’m sure she could race on, but there you are, it wasn’t my decision. I’ve only got 10 per cent,” Frazer said.

Famous colours

Spright raced in the purple and white colours of the White family’s Robrick Lodge, silks that have also been carried to Group 1 successes by the likes of Marscay (Biscay), Filante (NZ) (Star Way {GB}), Triscay (Marscay), Eremein (Timber Country {USA}) and Jetball (Marscay).

The Whites have also bred or sold numerous Group 1 winners, including Hugh Bowman’s first in Defier (Dehere {USA}), La Baraka (Euclase), Excellerator (Marscay) and Danglissa (Danzero).

From the second crop of Hinchinbrook, Spright performed well at the highest level before she triumphed in the Robert Sangster.

“She really deserved that one, she didn’t have a lot of luck before that or after,” Frazer said.

Spright had previously finished runner-up in the G1 William Reid S. and third in the G1 Moir S. and following her South Australia feature win she ran third in the G1 Goodwood H.

She then headed to the Queensland winter carnival where she was fourth in the G1 Stradbroke H. and out of the money in the G1 Tatt’s Tiara in her final outing.

She was also successful at Group 3 level in the Crown Resorts Plate, Star Kingdom H. and in the Healy S.

“She could be a bit quirky, but everything in the family is the same,” Frazer said.

Pinhook special

Also integral to the Spright story is Gary Mudgway, a noted pinhooker who enjoyed one of his best results when he spied her in the draft of Holbrook Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Weanling Sale in 2014 and secured her for just $12,000.

The following year, Mudgway presented her at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale where she was knocked down to the final $100,000 bid of Inglis, as agent for the current ownership team.

Spright as a yearling

Spright is a daughter of the Dash For Cash mare Dashoff, a minor winner over 1100 metres, whose three foals to race have all won and also includes the Group 3 placegetter Mine Two (I Am Invincible).
