Sarah Worker - Ciaron Maher Racing

TDNAusNZ: Where are you from and what is your earliest racing memory?

SW: I’m from Clevedon, New Zealand, about 20 minutes from New Zealand Bloodstock in Karaka. Although I was always involved in something horsey from a young age, I didn’t get heavily involved in the racing industry in particular until more recent years. My earliest racing memory would have to be a quiet Saturday meeting when I was 8 and my grandmother’s $80 chance (Pyramus) flew in.

TDNAusNZ: What is your favourite day on the racecourse?

SW: Caulfield Guineas – it’s before the really big crowds take over in the spring, there are four Group 1s and The Everest to tune into as well.

TDNAusNZ: What was the biggest highlight of your season?

SW: I’ve loved watching Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) work her way to the top as I was very fond of her from before she went to Waller. She’s a quirky filly with ridiculous amounts of raw ability.

TDNAusNZ: What was the biggest highlight of your career?

SW: I like to think I haven’t peaked yet and it’s still to come!

TDNAusNZ: What do you love most about your job?

SW: Aside from the satisfaction of watching horses improve throughout their preps and careers, you also get to meet some passionate people from all walks of life and hear some great stories!

Verry Elleegant (NZ) is a filly Sarah has enjoyed watching progress

TDNAusNZ: Do you have a favourite horse in work right now? Why?

SW: I love watching the two-year-olds come through and a particular favourite is a Puissance de Lune colt called Heart of Puissance. He’s a big, scopey horse with a great attitude.

TDNAusNZ: Which is your favourite racehorse of all time? Why?

SW: Being a Kiwi I can’t go past Sunline (NZ) (Desert Sun {GB}).

TDNAusNZ: What’s the most used saying/word around the stables?

SW: I’m in Ballarat so it tends to revolve around how cold it is!

Sarah's favourite horse of all time is Sunline (NZ)

TDNAusNZ: Who do you think is a rising star in the racing industry? (person, not horse)

SW: A friend of mine, Nikki White, won a scholarship to study at Marcus Oldham. She’s a great horsewoman and I think she’ll do well no matter which direction she chooses to go in in the industry when she finishes her course.

TDNAusNZ: If you were an Everest slotholder, who would you pick?

SW: Osborne Bulls (Street Cry {Ire}).

TDNAusNZ: What positive change would you like to see in the industry?

SW: I’m hopeful that the racing reform currently going on in NZ continues to progress and results in an eventual revitalisation of a currently struggling domestic racing industry.

TDNAusNZ: If you weren’t in the racing industry what would you be doing?

Showjumping or Event Management.
