G1 Winx S., Randwick
Race summary:
Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) caused a major boilover in the season's first Group 1 race, leading all the way to claim the G1 Winx S. for trainer Bjorn Baker and jockey Tim Clark.
While seven of his nine rivals already had Group 1 wins on their resumes, Samadoubt, whose previous biggest win had come in this year's Listed Canberra Cup, bridged the class gap by making his own luck in front.
While the backmarkers closed all the way down the straight, the 6-year-old held them off to win by 0.5 length on the line with the 9-year-old Happy Clapper (Teofilo {Ire}) second and Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible) 0.3l back in third.
The pre-race favourite Avilius (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) finished well from the rear to claim fourth, while Kings Will Dream (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}), having his first run since fracturing a pelvis in the Cox Plate, was fifth.
Samadoubt, who had not even contested a Group 1 before Saturday, has now won nine of his 35 starts and nearly $800,000 in prizemoney.
Pedigree Notes:
Samadoubt, a $40,000 buy for Darby Racing at the 2015 Classic Sale, becomes the 11th Group 1 winner for his sire Not A Single Doubt. He is the only stakes-winner for his dam Isadora (Gold Fever {USA}), who has produced five winners in total, including the stakes-placed Thin Red Line (Redoute's Choice) and Hong Kong winner Malmsteen (Beneteau).
Isadora is a half-sister to Group 2 winning mare Apollo Wonder (Rory's Jester) and is also related to stakes-winners Kate's Myth, Speedy Kids and Brosberg. Also included in that extended family are Group 1 winners Akhenaton, Paint and Hay List.
Isadora's final foal before her death last year was a now 2-year-old filly by Rothesay, who fetched $38,000 from Darby Racing at this year's Scone Yearling Sale.
G2 Darley Silver Shadow S., Randwick
Race summary:
Emerging star Libertini (I Am invincible) has lived up to the off-season hype, destroying her rivals by 2.3 lengths to claim the opening leg of the Darley Princess Series in the G2 Silver Shadow S.
Having her first run since her authoritative victory in the Listed Woodlands S. back in May, Libertini was given the perfect ride by Tommy Berry, just in behind the early pacesetters Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau) and Villami (Foxwedge).
Off the hot pace, she pulled off their backs at the top of the straight and Berry had not moved on the filly as she strode to the lead. He opened her up for the better part of 100m, before taking a hold of her over the final 50m, as she eclipsed the old class record over the Randwick 1200m in a stunning 1:07.93.
Flit (Medaglia d'Oro {USA}) closed well from the rear of the field to nab second, a nose ahead of Let It Pour (Redoute's Choice), while Villami finished fourth.
Libertini will now continue through the Princess Series to the G2 Darley Furious S. at the same track and distance on September 7.
Pedigree notes:
Libertini, bred by Gerry Harvey, and raced by Harvey and John Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud, is the third foal and first daughter of outstanding mare Aloha (Encosta de Lago), who won eight races, including the G1 Coolmore Classic. She has also produced the winners My Prince Charming (More Than Ready {USA}) and Hualalai (Street Cry {Ire})
Aloha herself is out of the stakes winner Tennessee Midnight (Danehill {USA}), who is a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner Malaguerra (Magnus). The pedigree page also features the G1 ATC Champagne S. winner Seabrook (NZ) (Hinchinbrook).
Aloha has a 2-year-old filly by Sebring and a yearling filly by I Am Invincible. Breeder Gerry Harvey picked up a nomination to Darley stallion Harry Angel (Ire) as breeder of the first leg winner of the Darley Princess Series.
G3 The Luxury Network Up and Coming S., Randwick
Race summary:
True Detective has secured the G3 Up and Coming S. in the stewards' room, over Superium (Verrazano {USA}).
The pair had fought out a stirring battle over the final 200m, with the Joseph Pride-trained Superium getting the upper hand over the final stages to win by 0.2l.
However, James McDonald on True Detective for trainer Chris Waller successfully argued to stewards that his horse had been impeded as Superium hung out over the last 50m, where contact was made between the two 3-year-olds.
Lucicello (I Am invincible) ran on to finish third, another two-lengths further back.
The result sees True Detective secure his first black-type win, and second overall, at start number four having run second at his previous two starts.
Pedigree notes:
A $100,000 Classic Sale purchase for Performance Genetics LLC, True Detective is out of Girls Rule (Geiger Counter {USA}), who has already produced the stakes-placed Turquoise King (Stratum), who along with another half-brother Super Eight (Hussonet {USA}), was a four-time winner in Singapore.
Girls Rule is a half-sister to stakes-winner Roll On Royce (Desert Sun {GB}), which is the family of fellow black-type performers Twin Oak (Oak Ridge {Fr}), Overated (Wallenda {USA}) and G1 Victoria Derby winner Fire Oak (Oak Ridge {Fr}).
Girls Rule has only had two live foals from her past seven seasons, True Detective and a yearling filly by Sizzling. True Detective is from the second crop of now Rosemont Stud stallion Shamus Award and becomes his fourth stakes winner.
G3 Mostyn Copper Show County Quality., Randwick
Race summary:
Deprive (Denman) edged out the fast-finishing Trope (More Than Ready {USA}) to claim his second stakes victory in a thrilling finish to the G3 Show County Quality at Randwick.
It took the judge around five minutes to separate the leading two, with the James Cummings' trained Deprive shooting clear on the inside for jockey Rachel King, only for the well-backed Trope to close quickly under Tommy Berry out wide.
Bon Amis (Bon Hoffa), was not much further way in third after closing well alongside Trope late.
The win is Deprive's seventh success from just 10 starts and stretched his winning streak to four. He was fresh from his last start win in the Listed June S.
Pedigree notes:
Deprive is the second foal from Defrock (Canny Lad), the full sister to Group 3 winner Blackball, with their dam Excommunicate (Grand Lodge {USA}) a half-sister to Group 2 winner Hosannah (Octagonal). Group 2 winners Altar (Commands) and Holy Roller (Sanction) also feature on the page.

She also has an unraced 4-year-old Leave Your Hat On (Helmet), a 3-year-old filly named Don’t Question Me (Foxwedge) and a 2-year-old by Star Witness called Yulong Defence, who was a $400,000 buy at the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. She has a yearling colt by Foxwedge and visited freshman sire Hellbent in 2018.
Deprive is one of 16 stakes-winners for new Twin Hills stud resident Denman.
G3 Toy Show Quality., Randwick
Mizzy (Zoustar) secured a deserved black-type win, claiming the G3 Toy Show Quality at Randwick.
The Anthony Cummings-trained filly has competed in top-quality company through much of her career, finishing second in a G3 Ming Dynasty S. and fourth in both the G1 Coolmore Classic and the G1 Surround S.
Up until Saturday, her only win was in a Canterbury maiden, but a perfect ride from Tommy Berry secured a second win from 14 starts, and a valuable stakes success, as she came from just behind the pace to win by 1.3l.
She defeated Soothing (Lonhro), who was briefly cut out for a run by the winner at the 100m, and the bolter My Xpression (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}).
She has now won over $330,000 for her owners.
Pedigree Notes:
Mizzy was a $200,000 purchase for her trainer at the 2017 Easter Sale. Bred by Robert Crabtree, she is the first foal out of Missy Cummings (Magnus), who was a Listed winner.
The second dam, Lady Knockout (Serheed {USA}) was also a stakes-winner and produced four winners. She is a sister to a pair of Listed winners in Expunge (Gilded Time {USA}) and Young Lionel (Blackfriars) out of a Group 2 winning mare in Prime Again (Marooned {GB}). It makes Mizzy a fourth generation black-type winner.
Missy Cummings has a 3-year-old Pierro filly called Combat Queen, who is unraced in New Zealand with Jamie Richards, while there is also a yearling colt by Capitalist. She is due to Written Tycoon this year.
Listed Seppelt Wines Carlyon S., 1000m, $140,000., Moonee Valley
Race summary:
Two weeks after tasting defeat for the first time, Assertive Approach (Akeed Mofeed {GB}) bounced back in style with an impressive front-running performance.
The exciting sprinter speared forward to take the lead within the first 50m of the race, and he and jockey Dwayne Dunn never looked back from there.
Assertive Approach produced a strong kick at the top of the straight. Bons Away (Bon Hoffa) came at him with a strong finish from the back, but Assertive Approach clung on by a half-neck.
Oak Door (Commands), who sat in third for most of the race, maintained that position and crossed the line a length and three-quarters behind the first pair.
Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, Assertive Approach has now had five starts for four wins and a second placing.
Pedigree notes:
Assertive Approach is the first stakes winner for Akeed Mofeed, who moved to Swettenham Stud this year, having previously stood at Goldin Farms in Adelaide. Akeed Mofeed has sired a total of 22 winners from 46 runners to date.
Bred and raced by Goldin Farms, Assertive Approach is the first winner from three foals to race for the stakes-placed mare Arrival (Choisir).
Arrival is a three-quarter sister to Tuscan Sling (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who won seven races including the G3 Geoffrey Bellmaine S., the G3 Mannerism S and the Listed Christmas S.
Listed McMahon’s Dairy McKenzie S., 1200m, $140,000., Moonee Valley
Race summary:
Low-priced yearling purchase Condo’s Express (Rubick) emerged as a bright 3-year-old sprinting talent with an impressive performance in the Moonee Valley feature.
Ridden by Linda Meech, the colt raced in fourth spot before bursting into contention at the top of the straight. The favoured Hightail (Written Tycoon) gave chase, but Condo’s Express was out of reach and completed an emphatic victory by two and a quarter lengths.
Hawker Hurricane (Deep Field) was a similar margin away in third.
The Richard Laming-trained Condo’s Express has now had five starts for two wins and three placings. He finished second in all of his first three appearances, but has taken a huge step forward with back-to-back wins in his last two starts.
Pedigree notes:
Condo’s Express cost just $3,000 at the 2018 Scone Yearling Sale.
He is the first named foal for the placed mare Braided (Elusive Quality {USA}), who is a half-sister to the South African Group performer Wild Ash (Dylan Thomas {Ire}).
Condo’s Express is the second stakes winner for Rubick, joining the G2 Todman S. winner Yes Yes Yes. Overall, Rubick has been represented by 21 winners from 56 runners.
