Looking Ahead - September 11

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Wednesday, Gary Portelli produces a promising filly with a tidy pedigree at Warwick Farm where a Waterhouse-Bott representative has trialled well ahead of his debut, while at Bendigo we zero on a lightly-tried colt who has produced a couple of encouraging runs for Jason Warren.

Canterbury Park Race 1, 1.25pm, Holler @ Darley H., $50,000, 1550m

Parche (I Am Invincible) is a half-sister to the Listed Hareeba S. winner Jolie Blonde (Testa Rossa) and they are out of Danoiserie (Danehill {USA}), who is a half-sister to the G1 Champagne S. winner Isolda (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}). The dam has also left the G3 Hobart Cup winner Bid Spotter (Redoute’s Choice) and is the family of the multiple Group 2 winner and G1 Memsie S. placegetter Mahuta (Flying Spur).

I Am Invincible, sire of Parche

Gary Portelli trains this filly for Gerry Harvey and she placed in a couple of trials before she made her first race day appearance at Warwick Farm. Over 1300 metres, Parche came from the back of the field to run 4th and the step up in trip here looks ideal for the 3-year-old.

Canterbury Park Race 3, 2.35pm, Everest Carnival H., $50,000, 1250m

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Good Stock (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is well-named as he comes from a strong family and one that boasts its share of speed. He was a NZ$320,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale purchase and an early return looks on the cards following the gelding’s Randwick trial winner under Tim Clark, who takes the mount again.

Good Stock as a yearling

Good Stock is the first foal of Big Voices (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}), successful twice up to 1600 metres, and she is a daughter of the G1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce S. winner Good Faith (NZ) (Straight Strike {USA}). The dam has also produced the G3 McNeil S. winner Tully Dane (Danehill {USA}) and the Listed Canterbury Breeders’ S. winner Mygoodgrace (Royal Academy {USA}). The G2 Sweet Embrace S. winner Believe Yourself (Sebring) is also on the pedigree page.

Bendigo Race 3, 1.35pm Reece Maiden Plate, $50,000, 1600m

Sebsilk (Sebring) is a half-brother to the stakes performed siblings Electric Fusion (Fastnet Rock) and Refer and they are out of Silken Song (Unbridled’s Song), who won two races up to 1400 metres. She is a half-sister to the Listed Angst H. winner Danasia (Danehill {USA}), in turn the dam of the G1 Rosehil Guineas winner Zabrasive (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), and another half-sister is the dam of the G3 Epona S. winner Scratchy Bottom (Sebring).

Sebsilk as a yearling

The G1 Flight S. winner Cheeky Choice (Redoute’s Choice) is a headline act in the pedigree of Sebsilk, who was a $150,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale purchase for trainer Jason Warren. The colt was runner-up on debut before he made late ground over 1400 metres at Geelong for 5th. Ben Melham continues his association with the 3-year-old and the step up to a mile could bring a breakthrough result.
