Race summary:

The Celt (Planet Five {USA}) has finished a solid second in the G3 Colonel Reeves S. at his previous start and he had no trouble going one better.

Despite his lead-up form, he was allowed out at 23-1 and came with a storming late finish to beat a gallant Valour Road (Frost Giant {USA}).

The runner-up bounced well from an outside gate to race on the pace and fought on gallantly with Abdicator (Universal Ruler) third.

Pedigree notes:

A half-brother to two winners, The Celt is out of the Tribu mare Cintrice and she won one race and finished third in the Listed Burgess Queen S.

Under the second dam Triumphant Star (Oenjay Star) is Cintrice’s three-quarter sister Trimagic, who was a collected a brace of wins as a 2-year-old and ran second in the G2 Western Australian Guineas.

The only other performer of note in the first three generations is the G3 Coles H. winner Marabou’s Phantom (NZ) (Mussorgsky {Ire}).

Race summary :

Sanabreanna (Red Hot Choice) didn’t look to be travelling like a winner before the turn, but the filly showed her quality and toughness under pressure.

Rider Joseph Azzopardi gave her a couple of reminders before the turn and she responded by producing a dashing late finish.

The favourite Massimo (Sessions) raced outside the leader and he fought on gamely for second with the well-performed maiden Laverrod (Toronado {Ire}) third after having every chance.

The dam of Sanabreanna is Sanabresa (Scenic {Ire}) and she has also produced the winner Passiona Cantata (Oratorio), who ran third in the G3 Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic.

Sanabresa is a daughter of Risa Cantina (NZ) (Conquistarose {USA}) is a half-sister to the Listed Marton Cup winner Viz Vitae (NZ) (Shinko King {Ire}).

The G3 RJ Peters S. winner Freo (Izmir) is also a member of this family.

Race summary :

Dean Yendall gave Beautiful Mind (Sou You Think {NZ}) a perfect trip behind the leader and the 5-year-old was good enough to make the most of it.

She was in to the open soon after straightening and finished powerfully to take her record to four wins from nine appearances.

A fresh Like A Butterfly (Blakfriars) gave a bold account of himself and hit the front 200 metres from home before he was run down late while Snowchino (Maschino) hung on for third after making the play out in front.

Beautiful Mind was a $250,000 Inglis Premier Melbourne Yearling Sale purchase and is a daughter of the well-performed Small Minds (Canny Lad).

She won four races, including the G1 Schweppes Oaks and the Listed Adelaide Guineas and both of her foals to race have won.

Small Minds is a half-sister to Marwin Gold (Marwina) and her 20 wins featured the Listed June S. and within the first two generations the only other black type performer are Lord Dalmar (Seventh Hussar {Fr}) and Aria Quest (West Quest {Can}).

Pakenham, Listed Sportsbet Pakenham Cup, 300,000, 2500m

Race summary :

Etah James (NZ) (Raise The Flag {USA}) posted an upset victory with a superior staying performance after racing on a good pace.

The 7-year-old sat in second spot all the way and took over 200 metres from and stayed on strongly for her first victory for two years.

The favourite Secret Blaze (Sizzling) came from the tail of the field for second and Valac (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who lodged his challenge soon after straightening, was third.

Pedigree notes :

The Matt Cumani-trained Etah James is a son of Etah (NZ) (Danasinga) and she is a sister to Tickle (NZ), who won twice at Group 3 level.

It’s not a family laden with black type performers and you have to go well back in the pedigree to find the English Thousand Guineas winner Full Dress (Fr) (Shantung {Fr}).
