Extreme Choice’s son Palamos produced a commanding display on debut for trainer Jamie Richards in the NZB RTR Trainers’ Series 2YO at Te Rapa on Saturday to credit the stallion with his first winner.
Newgate’s day subsequently went to another level when Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice), who they have an ownership interest in, was successful for trainers Richard and Michael Freedman in the Forum Group Kirkham Plate at Randwick.
Capitalist was off the mark when Captivant was recently successful in the Victory Vein S. at Randwick while Flying Artie’s daughter Princess Bojack credited him with his first success when she won at Eagle Farm earlier this month.
Now Extreme Choice has joined them and to the obvious delight of the Hunter Valley operation.
“We’re just waiting for Winning Rupert with the other three all now having winners so it’s a terrific outcome,” Newgate Managing Director Henry Field said.

“It's just amazing to have two quality colts like Tiger Of Malay and Palamos win. Tiger Of Malay might go to the Golden Gift now and to have a winner for Jamie Richards, and I heard that he thinks he’s the top draft pick for the Karaka Million, is very encouraging.”
Extreme Choice has been well-received by breeders since his retirement off the back of an outstanding racing career.
“He only covers a limited book, but he’s been very popular and is again this year so it’s pretty exciting and a great way to get the ball rolling,” Field said.

Trained by Mick Price, Extreme Choice won four of his eight starts, including the G1 Blue Diamond S. and as a 3-year-old trumped the older horses in the G1 Moir S. and finished third in the G1 Oakleigh Plate.
“People forget just how good he was, he was an outstanding racehorse,” Field said.
“He had just over 40 foals from his first crop and he’s already had a very dominant winner in New Zealand for the powerful Te Akau stable and a stakes horse.
“You can’t do much more than that and we have to manage his fertility and we look after him. If he can throw 40 to 60 foals every year for the rest of his career he is going to be a very important horse on our roster.”
On the board
Tiger Of Malay sat three wide with cover near the pace and finished off in determined fashion for rider Jason Collett to run down Cerda (Snitzel).
“He is a lovely colt and came on a lot from his trial at Warwick Farm. I said to Henry during the week that if he was in the race on the corner he’d be a chance,” Michael Freedman said.
“He’ll learn a lot from today and I really liked the way he attacked the line, there’s improvement to come.

“We’ll see how he pulls up, but there is the option of the Golden Gift or turn him out and come back for the spring.”
Tiger Of Malay was offered by Tyreel Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale with Newgate and the China Horse Club going to $255,000 to secure the colt.
He is a half-brother to the G3 Champion Fillies' S. winner Samovare (Savabeel) and the G3 Asian Beau S. winner Samizdat (Not A Single Doubt) and they are out of Sambar (More Than Ready {USA}).
Headline acts in the pedigree are the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Kiamichi (Sidestep) and the G1 VRC Sires’ Produce S. winner Preserve (Canny Lady).
Great Southern graduate
Palamos was bred by SF Bloodstock and originally purchased out of Newgate’s draft at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling and Bloodstock Sale by Auckland bloodstock agent Paul Willetts for $65,000.
He was then offered by Ainsley Downs at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and secured by Te Akau’s David Ellis for NZ$85,000.
He is the only race day representative of Unrevealed (USA) (Forest Wildcat {USA}), a four-time winner in Japan, who is a sister to the G3 Ouija Board Distaff H. winner Brownie Points (USA). She is the dam of Group winners Synchrony (USA) (Tapit {USA}) and Chocolate Kisses (USA) (Candy Ride {Arg}).
The winner of both of his lead-up trials, Palamos sat in third spot off the fence for rider Troy Harris and when asked for a serious effort he surged clear to score by 2l. The winning cheque has also ensured the chestnut colt a spot in January’s Karaka Million.
