Princely prospect
Flemington, Listed VRC St Leger, $200,000, 2800m
Prince Romany (Americain {USA}) showed rich staying potential at his most recent appearance when he won over 2400 metres at Bendigo. He shouldered 60kg against the older horses and looks well-placed against his own age group.
Favreau (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) made late ground for sixth in the G1 Australian Derby so faces an obvious drop in class and looks an obvious chance while Through Irish Eyes (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is lightly tried and his run for second in the Listed Galilee Series Final was a solid effort.
Secret Sheema (NZ) (Proisir) was fourth in that race and Furioso (NZ) (Atlante) fifth so they don’t need to improve much to be competitive.
Salto Angel (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}) has yet to win a race, but was runner-up in the G1 VRC Oaks in the spring so she does have class on her side. Tictoc Tictoc (Tavistock {NZ}) won well enough at Bendigo last time out to be a hope at longer odds.
Ultimate chance
Flemington, Listed Anzac Day S., $140,000, 1400m
He’s The Ultimate (NZ) (Fastnet Rock) delivered a sign of winning things to come on debut when he finished runner-up in the Listed Redoute’s Choice S. for trainer Peter Moody. The colt will also have the benefits of the inside gate and Luke Nolen in the saddle.
Cheerful Legend (Shalaa {Ire}) has made a bright start to his career with a win three runs back and two solid efforts since. He was third last time out behind Hunnam (Shalaa {Ire}), race rivals again and meets him 3kg better off this time.
Three Kings (Sebring) produced a tidy performance to beat Camaguey (Teofilo {Ire}) at Ballarat and they both present as each-way chances again. Tametomo (NZ) (Savabeel) won well at Sale and any luck from an awkward gate can see him in the finish.
Mare prime mile hope
Feilding, Listed Manawatu ITM Anzac Mile, NZ$50,000, 1550m
Mai Tai (NZ) (Atlante) is a progressive type and she continued her march through the grades with an effortless win at Ellerslie last time out. She looks well-placed here to make a good first account at her black-type debut.
Pierina (NZ) (Savabeel) powered home for fourth last time out and the extra distance will be in her favour while Colorado Star (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) and Credit Manager (NZ) (Pins) won their last starts well enough to back their chances again.
Vernanme (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) has beaten better fields than this in the past so he has to be taken seriously and Deerfield (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}) has been up for a while, but his most recent effort for second in the Listed Flying S. showed he’s thriving on the workload.
