Rich Hill Stud resident Vadamos (Fr) sired his first Southern Hemisphere winner when his daughter Art De Triomphe (NZ) was successful at Riccarton.

The Andrew Carston-trained filly was an encouraging third on debut and produced a tenacious display to rally strongly after disputing the pace to claim Saturday’s NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race.

“It’s good to get the monkey off the back and it was a very good effort by the filly, just looking at her action she would probably appreciate a firmer track,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson said.

“Vadamos has got quite a few promising youngsters around and it was only a matter of time before he got his first winner.”

Art De Triomphe was purchased out of Seaton Park’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale by Albert Bosma’s Go Racing for $NZ80,000. She is a daughter of the G3 Winter Cup winner Art Beat (NZ) (Captain Rio {GB}).

Associate Rich Hill sires Shocking and Proisir were also to the fore on Saturday with the former’s son Heza Shocker (NZ) posting an upset victory in the G2 Trelawney Stud Championship S. and Manrico (NZ) won for the third time from his last four starts when successful in the VRC Trophy at Ellerslie.

A race later, Proisir 3-year-old Bari (NZ) made all the running in the Madison Qualitex H. and scooted clear in the run home to take his record to a brace of wins from five appearances.

Expectations had been for the first crop of Vadamos, who has produced 20 winners from his Northern Hemisphere base including stakes performers Messidor (Ire) and Spycatcher (Ire), to shine in the autumn.

“Vadamos’ results up there were a bit surprising with the number of early winners he got. It’s shaping up really well for a horse with his pedigree,” Thompson said.

A son of Monsun (Ger), Vadamos is out of the stakes-winning Peintre Celebre (USA) mare Celebre Vadala (Fr) and the family of multiple Group 1 winner and sire Valixir (Ire).

Vadamos won eight races with his career highlight a victory in the G1 Chantilly Prix du Moulin and the André Fabre-trained performer ended his career in Australia with fourth placings in the G1 Cox Plate and G1 Emirates S.

“He’s been a popular horse and in his first year covered more than 100 mares and he did again last year. They continue to sell well and this year at Karaka it was really encouraging as sometimes it can be a bit sticky,” Thompson said.

Vadamos, who now shuttles from Coolmore in Ireland, will return to Rich Hill in 2021 with the farm to announce its service fees next week.
