Looking Ahead - June 9

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we are expecting a bold showing at Canterbury Park from a resuming filly and a colt who can significantly improve on a handy debut effort. At Sale, we like a 3-year-old whose sole outing to date resulted in a second in what has become a good form race.

Mura Mura (Not A Single Doubt) took on some quality 2-year-olds during her first preparation and can take advantage of a drop back in class on her return. She placed in both the Kirkham and the Golden Gift and was turned out after an unplaced run in the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic and returned to win a recent trial.

Mura Mura as a yearling

Offered by Arrowfield Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Mura Mura was purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $650,000 and placed with Peter and Paul Snowden. She is out of the Northern Meteor mare Mount Zero, a daughter of the stakes-winning juvenile Beauty School. There is further 2-year-old form in the family through the presence of G1 Golden Slipper S. winner and sire Farnan.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Preemptory (Winning Rupert) wasn’t far away when he finished sixth on debut on the Kensington track and is sure to be all the better for the experience. He is one of the few in this lineup to have had the benefit of a run and Jason Collett taking the ride again is another plus.

Preemptory was bred and sold by Daandine Stud for $180,000 to Maher and Astute Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is a son of Tears (Stromberg Carlson), who was successful three times over sprint distances. She is out of a half-sister to the dam of the G1 Vinery Stud S. winner Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt), whose half-brother Le Val (Snitzel) won the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic.

The Alderson family-bred Veranskova (Written Tycoon) is a daughter of the Listed Moomba Plate winner and Group 3 performer Kirvinsky (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}). She is a half-sister to the Listed Waikato Stud S. winner Kalamata (NZ) (Desert Prince {Ire}), who is the dam of the G3 SAJC Sires’ Produce S. winner Stirling Grove (Mossman).

The headline act on the pedigree page is the G1 Emirates S. and two-time Group 3 winner Hucklebuck (Elvstroem). Trained by Cindy Alderson, Veranskova showed her quality when a debut third at Pakenham before a break. In front of her that day was Written Miss (Written Tycoon), who subsequently won again, and Miss Divine Em (Super One), who then posted five consecutive placings in decent company. That effort bodes well for Veranskova’s immediate prospects.
