G2 XXXX Run to the Rose, $200,000, 1200m

Race summary

Running down a very brave In The Congo (Snitzel), who dictated the race and rallied hard to finish second, Anamoe (Street Boss {USA}) won by a neck with the heavily-backed Remarque (Snitzel) just over 1l away third.

Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) raced outside In The Congo with the pair breaking clear from the chasing pack before the turn.

In The Congo was tough, remaining in a dogged fight, while Stay Inside faded to run fifth.

By exceptional sire Street Boss (USA), Anamoe is a Godolphin homebred from G1 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato (Redoute's Choice). She was a top-class mare, also finishing third behind elite pair Maldivian (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) in the 2007 G1 Yalumba S.

Anamato is out of six-time winner and Listed-placed mare Voltage (Whiskey Road {USA}), making her a half-sister to 1996 G1 Oakleigh Plate winner, Drum (Marauding {NZ}) and the dam of seven-time Group 1 winner Grand Armee (Hennessey {USA}).

Anamato is currently in foal to Blue Point (Ire) after missing in 2020, She produced a colt by Shooting To Win who now two, named Dartboard.

The Street Cry (Ire) – Redoute’s Choice cross is a special one, having produced six individual Group 1 winners: Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}), Savatiano (Street Cry {Ire}), Stay With Me (Street Cry {Ire}) and Bonham (Per Incanto {USA}).

Race summary

Riding her like the best horse in the race, James McDonald wasn’t going to let poor luck ruin the chances of Entriviere (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), positioning her in a beautiful spot, slightly worse than midfield.

Vulpine (Snitzel) and Written Beauty (Written Tycoon) set a hot pace, which further played into McDonald’s hands as he strode up and took control of the event as she lengthened in the straight.

Entriviere defeated a fast-finishing Fituese (Deep Field) by 1.5l with Marboosha (Dream Ahead {USA}) in third.

Entriviere was bred by esteemed New Zealand trainer Kevin Gray and his wife Kathleen.

She is by the late Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock (NZ), who is the sire of 334 winners including 31 stakes winners. His standout progeny include the Classic winners Werther (NZ), Tarzino (NZ), Tavago (NZ), Johnny Get Angry (NZ), Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) and Toffee Tongue (NZ).

The dam of Entrivere is Marcey’s Belt (Golan {Ire}), a half-sister to the G2 Light Fingers S. winner Adrift (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), the R. Listed Karaka Million 2YO winner Xiong Feng (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) and the stakes-placed Pump It (NZ) (Savabeel).

Marcey’s Belt is the dam of four winners from four foals to race, with Satin Belt (NZ) (Power {GB}) also a black-type performer through a placing in the Listed Castletown S. She had a filly by Burgundy (NZ) last season and is currently empty.

G2 Chandon Theo Marks S., $200,000, 1300m

Race summary

Chat (Deep Field) produced a career-best effort in the 1300-metre event, upsetting the field when he powered home to overhaul Embracer (Sebring) and win by a long neck.

The hot favourite Big Parade (Deep Field) lead the field easily, however he was caught by Embracer at the 400-metre mark and stuck on well for third. Nimalee (So You Think {NZ}) was an eye-catching black book for next star, flying home to finish fourth.

Pedigree Notes

Chat broke through for his first stakes win, upsetting a quality field in the G2 Theo Marks S. In doing so, he became the 11th stakes winner for his young sire Deep Field.

Chat is a son of End Sweep (USA) mare Only Words, herself a three-time Group 2 winner and dam of Group 2 winner Holy Snow (Fastnet Rock). Only Words is a daughter of Group 2 winner What Can I Say (Khozaam {USA}), who produced stakes-winning filly Gibraltar Campion (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}).

The 21-year-old Only Words was covered last season by Spirit Of Boom, she has a Merchant Navy 2-year-old filly and Foxwedge 3-year-old colt, both were not offered for sale.

Bred and sold by Canning Downs, Chat was purchased by his trainer John Thompson from the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $130,000.

Deep Field is standing at Newgate Farm for $88,000 (inc GST) this season.

Listed Drinkwise Dulcify S., $150,000, 1500m

Race summary

Three-year-old Giannis (Flying Artie) broke his maiden in the Listed Dulcify S., getting the better of Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) after a two-horse battle.

Kerrin McEvoy, on the winner, followed Tiger Of Malay in the run. The two horses fought out the race, Giannis eventually winning by a head.

While Royalzel (Snitzel) couldn’t quite keep pace the last 200-metre, he stuck on well for third, a long neck away.

Exciting young sire Flying Artie has sired his second stakes winner with colt Giannis winning the Listed Dulcify S.

He is the first foal from Fastnet Rock mare Palace Rock (NZ), a Group 3-placed mare in New Zealand. Palace Rock is a sister to Group 1 winner Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock) and Listed winner Fast Dragon. Palace Rock has two colts by Hellbent coming through and is in foal to Newgate Farm sire Russian Revolution.

Giannis placed second as a 2-year-old in the G1 JJ Atikns Plate. Bred by China Horse Club, he was purchased for $67,500 as a weanling from the Magic Millions National Sale by Rhys Smith from Sledmere Stud, then passed in as a yearling.

Both Flying Artie’s stakes winners, Artorius and Giannis, are from mares by stallions sired by Danehill (USA).

Flying Artie is standing his fifth season at Newgate Farm for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).
