Listed Cranbourne Cup, $500,000, 1600m

Robbie Griffiths (in partnership with Mathew de Kock) continued his love affair with the Magnus breed by winning his home track’s feature event.

It was a deserved victory for King Magnus (Magnus) who had finished right on the heels of the placegetters in the G1 Cantala S. at his previous outing.

Bred by Mr J Pratt, King Magnus is a full brother to the city winner Influential Girl out of the city winner Influential Miss (Carnegie {Ire}) (served last spring by Teofilo {Ire}) whose grandam is the European Listed winner Persian Secret (Fr) (Persian Heights {GB}), third dam of the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}).

The 25th stakes winner for Widden Victoria’s ever reliable Magnus, King Magnus boasts crosses of the influential mares Natalma (USA) (Native Dancer {USA}) and Tara (Fr) (Teddy {Fr}).

Listed Keith Noud H., $130,000, 1200m

Brave kicking up along the rails, Tambo’s Mate (Mossman) did a good job winning his 10th race at his 26th start, this success is his third at stakes level.

One of 41 stakes winners sired by Mossman who enjoyed a lengthy and consistent career at stud, Tambo’s Mate is a homebred for Mr D Tamblyn out of the city-placed two-time winner Passagemaker (Canny Lad).

Served last December by Pierata (Pierro), Passagemaker is a daughter of the Listed winner Georgia Belle (Clear Choice {USA}), half-sister to the stakes-placed Does She Bite (Yeats {USA}).

This is a family that has produced a G1 Melbourne Cup winner; the 1970 winner Baghdad Note (NZ) (Kurdistan {GB}).

Tambo’s Mate is bred on the same Mossman/Canny Lad cross as the G1 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun and the G1 Coolmore Classic winner OfcourseIcan, noting that Mossman is a descendant of Mumtaz Begum (Fr) (Blenheim {GB}) who strongly influences Canny Lad’s pedigree.
