Torryburn Stud will present an 11-strong draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale starting on Sunday, February 11. One of Australia’s top vendors, the undoubted highlight of recent years was breeding and producing Coolmore’s brilliant dual-Group 1 winner turned sire Home Affairs.
The five colts and six fillies they will send through the ring over the next few days offers a great opportunity to tap into some of their most successful bloodlines. A range of precocious and more Classic types sit amongst the draft, and they’re by a selection of Australia’s top proven and emerging sires including Capitalist, Dundeel (NZ), The Autumn Sun and Deep Field.
In fact, Deep Field is the sire of one of Torryburn’s recent successful graduates of this very sale; Voyage Bubble, out of the four-time winning Rahy (USA) mare Raheights, was sold by Torryburn at the 2020 version of this sale and was a recent winner of the Listed Hong Kong Classic Mile.
Lot 77 - Magna Grecia (Ire) x Slots (filly)
Lot 77 is a striking scopey filly by Magna Grecia (Ire). Her sire, a Coolmore shuttler, was a late-season Group 1 Winner at two and a Classic winner at three, and this filly is an excellent stamp of him. He’s by Europe’s brilliant Invincible Spirit (Ire), sire of Australia’s Champion I Am Invincible, and the limited number bred on the same cross include G3 Breeders’ Plate placegetter Covert Ops (I Am Invincible).
This filly has a big, classy walk and is very athletic. She’s out of a young mare, Slots (Casino Prince), who was a tough and consistent performer. Her seven victories included a Listed event, and she’s from a family of stakes winners which includes the G1 Queensland Oaks-placed Citirecruit (Citidancer {Ire}).
That mare not only won as a juvenile, but also placed in the G3 Black Opal S. and this filly looks a similar type - a high-class, early runner who has the potential to progress in her Classic year.
Lot 164 - The Autumn Sun x Tomelilla (NZ) (colt)
Consigned as Lot 164, this power-packed colt is by The Autumn Sun, whose first 2-year-olds have already made a great impression this season. A son of the breed-shaping Redoute’s Choice, he was a sensational racehorse, very nearly unbeaten, and a five-time Group 1 winner.
His first crop of juveniles to hit the tracks already include a winner from just four runners, and trainers are evidently taken by them as support for the sire has continued with vigour at this year’s sales.
This colt is a beautiful example, with a deep girth, huge shoulder and powerful hindquarter. He is the second foal from Tomelilla (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), a Group 3 winner who’s a sister to Group 3 winner Viktor Vegas (NZ).
Under his third dam, this colt is from the family of Group 1 winner and first-season sire Castelvecchio. The Redoute’s Choice/Tavistock (NZ) cross has been notably successful from limited numbers, with all five runners being winners, including Group 3 winner Bellacontte (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}).
Lot 236 - Dundeel (NZ) x Aliberani (filly)
Lot 236 is an excellent type by the emerging sire-of-sires Dundeel (NZ). She’s a half-sister to juvenile winner and Group 3-placed Light Up The Room (So You Think {NZ}), and is from a prolific and deep family.
Her dam is the Redoute’s Choice mare Aliberani, herself a four-time winner and a half-sister to the dam of Miss Tycoon Rose (Written Tycoon), a New Zealand 1000 Guineas runner-up. She is an athletic and free-moving filly with a strong shoulder and a fantastic temperament.
Redoute’s Choice is an incredible broodmare sire, being responsible for Zoustar, Trekking, Super Seth and Anamoe, amongst a total of 26 Group 1 winners.
Lot 499 - Toronado (Ire) x Isle of Capri (filly)
A daughter of Toronado (Ire), this filly (Lot 499) has a remarkable physique, with her strong shoulder opening up her big-striding, powerful walk. Like her sire, she’s a strong and robust type with a kind eye and an excellent attitude.
She is out of the winning Street Cry (Ire) mare Isle Of Capri, who’s from the family of New Zealand Champion Sprinter Calveen (Canny Lad) and, more recently, Listed winner Millane (Zoustar).
Toronado is the sire of three Group 1 winners, including G1 William Reid S. winner Masked Crusader.
Lot 596 - Blue Point (Ire) x Memento (colt)
Lot 596 is a colt by Darley’s first-season shuttle stallion Blue Point (Ire). By the great Shamardal (USA), Blue Point was an exceptional sprinter in the Northern Hemisphere, the only horse ever to win three Group 1 sprints at Royal Ascot. His first yearlings were incredibly well-received at the first major yearling sales of this year, selling for up to $900,000.
Via the exploits of Shamardal himself, and another of his sons in Lope De Vega (Ire), buyers have been inspired by the success of the sireline in Australia, and Blue Point’s progeny look like continuing the trend. Much like his sire, this colt is a strong and imposing type, with plenty of scope, and he has that distinctive, Shamardal-style head.
He is the third foal from Memento (Your Song), a dual-winner who was Group 3-placed as a juvenile in the Magic Night S., with his second dam being a stakes-winning juvenile.
Lot 606 - Capitalist x Miss Gai Flyer (colt)
This colt, Lot 606, is by a leading sire of juveniles in Capitalist and is out of a stakes-winning mare. His dam, Miss Gai Flyer (Flying Spur) was a dual-Listed winner, placing in a Group 2 and precocious enough to win as a juvenile too.
She is the dam of two winners, and is from the family of Champion 2-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old Ha Ha (Danehill {USA}), amongst multiple other Group 1 winners.
This colt is a typical example of his sire, a neat and early running type with a great mind and good substance. Injecting great speed into pedigrees, Capitalist is already a sire of sires from just his handful of crops so far.
The Capitalist/Flying Spur cross fires at a rate of 85.7 per cent winners to runners, and includes G3 Black Opal S. winner Kalashnikov.
Lot 687 - Dundeel (NZ) x Progressive (filly)
This richly coloured bay filly (Lot 687) is by Dundeel (NZ) and out of the four-time winning Street Cry (Ire) mare Progressive, making her a half-sister to two-time winner Mayhem (Russian Revolution).
Progressive is a sister to Transfers, the dam of Listed winner Promotions (Exceed And Excel), and they are closely related to Manhattan Rain. This filly’s third dam is a three-quarter sister to Redoute’s Choice and Al Maher no less.
Well-muscled already, she is a strong type with a purposeful walk and a willing attitude, and looks to have the scope to improve into her Classic year.
