There is no better advertisement for a stud than a great horse and Amelia Park is home to one of those - the wonderful Amelia's Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) flying the flag for her breeders.
Buyers will be hoping to strike that sort of gold as they inspect the quality draft being presented by Amelia Park this week; 19 well related youngsters with highlights including...
Lot 7 - Deep Field x Amelia's Contraire (bay colt)
Hailing from the penultimate crop of his popular sire, he is the first foal for a mare whose four wins from 18 starts all came at metropolitan level. She is a half-sister to the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner Media Sensation (I Am Invincible) and to the promising recent easy Eagle Farm maiden winner To Wish (Fastnet Rock).
Amelia's Contraire's dam Different To (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Crusoe (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}) and to another NZ 1000 Guineas winner - Dorabella (NZ) (Postponed {USA}) - also winner of the G1 Captain Cook S.
This colt boasts duplications of two outstanding mares within six generations - Fairy Bridge (USA) (Bold Reason {USA}) via the full brothers Fairy King (USA) and Sadler's Wells (USA) - noting that Deep Field has sired three stakes winners bred on this cross - and Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces Of Eight {Ire}) - ancestress of Deep Field and dam of Kaapstad (NZ).
Six of the seven Deep Field runners out of mares carrying a Kaapstad strain are winners including the recent Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and geldings) winner High Octane (Deep Field) who - like this colt - is out of a Danehill (USA)-line mare.
Lot 22 - Wootton Bassett (GB) x Bound Copy (USA) (bay colt)
With Wootton Bassett's (GB) progeny proving so popular at the Gold Coast - fetching up to $2.1 million - is is likely that his sole Perth sale yearling is going to attract plenty of attention.
A half-brother to the durable Chairmanoftheboard (Ire) (Slade Power {Ire}) who raced well from two till seven, he is out of an imported Street Cry (Ire) mare who has outstanding local connections - her dam being the G2 Queen of the Turf S. winner In A Bound (Ashkalani {Ire}) whose dam holds her place in history as the only 2-year-old to earn the title of Australian Horse of the Year.
She is of course Bounding Away (Biscay) who sadly had just two foals, doing well to produce such a good one from those limited opportunities. Bounding Away's dam Who Can Say (NZ) (Sovereign Edition {Ire}) was also classy, winning the G2 SAJC Sires' Produce S. and also producing the G1 Metropolitan H. winner Glastonbury (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) as well as the grandam of the Group 1 winners Kenedna (Not A Single Doubt) and Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor).
Three of the four Wootton Bassett runners out of Street Cry mares are winners including the Group 3 winner Guildsman (Fr).
Lot 55 - Awesome Rock x Europa Point (bay/brown colt)
By a proven stallion out of a mare doing a great job from a family in the headlines this week, this is a colt who ticks a few boxes!
His two-time stakes placed, multiple city-winning dam boasts a 100% strike rate with her first five runners all winners including the stakes-placed La Farola (Deep Field) and the city winners Reveille (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Toropa (Toronado {Ire}) as well as the the dam of the millionaire Apache Pass (War Chant {USA}).
Europa Point's grandam Marooned Lady (Marooned {GB}) is the dam of 10-winners including the G2 Perth Cup winner King Canute (King Of Kings {Ire}) and the G2 Karrakatta Plate winner Redwoldt (King Of Kings {Ire}).
And the triple Group 1 winner Special Harmony (Spinning World {USA}) whose three- time Listed-winning daughter Little Surfer Girl (Encosta De Lago) is the dam of Fangirl (Sebring) who looks set, on the back of her stunning return in the G2 Apollo S., to further enhance the reputation of this family.
Lot 74 - Merchant Navy x Harpoon (bay colt)
It could be said that Amelia Park is lucky selling a second relation of Fangirl's but it is more testament to the stud's foresight in breeding with such a lovely group of mares that has seen them end up with such a nice collection of yearlings.
Amongst the very good horses to have been bred at Amelia Park include this fellow's half-sister She's Fit (Pride Of Dubai), winner of last year's G3 Western Australian Oaks and the Listed Natasha S. She is just the second foal for the city placed two times winner Harpoon whose dam Marooned Lady is, as already noted, the dam of Special Harmony; grandam of Fangirl.
Both Merchant Navy and Harpoon's sire High Chaparral (Ire) are members of the Chelandry (GB) (Goldfinch {GB}) family - both descendants of that influential matriarch's granddaughter Ascenseur (GB) (Eager {GB}). Chelandry features a couple more times in Marooned Lady via Dignitas (USA) and Tudor Melody (GB).
Lot 103 - Deep Field x Longduan (chestnut colt)
The second of Amelia Park's two sons of Deep Field in the sale, he is the first foal for a city placed Written Tycoon mare whose metropolitan winning stakes placed dam Strata Title (Strategic) produced the Group 3 placegetter Novel Dancer (Written Tycoon), dam of the dual Listed winner Pancho (Dissident).
This is a classy family that has been producing stakes winners for generations - such as the G1 VRC Oaks and G1 1000 Guineas heroine Rom's Stiletto (Sharp Edge {Ire}) and the Group winners Spirited One (Verglas {Ire}), New Smyrna (Rancho Ruler), Defcon and recent Listed Keith Noud H. winner Extremist (Extreme Choice).
The combination of Deep Field and Written Tycoon has not been tried much as yet but it is an interesting one with Written Tycoon a horse who has picked up nicely on the influence of Mumtaz Begum (Fr) (Blenheim {GB}) - ancestress of his dam sire Kenmare's (Fr) sire Kalamoun (GB)... and of Deep Field.
Lot 141 - Earthlight (Ire) x Queen's Parade (NZ) (chestnut colt)
Hailing from the debut crop of a French Champion 2YO Colt, he is the fourth foal for a city-placed winner who is showing plenty of potential as a broodmare - her first two foals Changing Guard (Impending) and King's Parade (Impending) are both city winners this season whilst her third, the 2-year-old Power Princess (Puissance De Lune {Ire}), has trialled nicely.
Queen's Parade (NZ) is one of the six winners produced by Press Leak (USA) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), also dam of the G3 Tibbie S. winner Spirit Bird (NZ) (Savabeel) and grandam of the G3 Stewards S. winner Buoyant (NZ) (Dalghar).
He is a colt with an interesting pedigree, his second damsire Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) being out of a mare by Be My Guest (USA) who is from the same family as Earthlight (Ire) - providing for a 6 X 7 cross of Rare Treat (USA) (Stymie {USA}) - the oh so tough Group 1 winner who raced no less than 101 times! The fifth dam of Earthlight, she is the grandam of Be My Guest.
A 6 X 6 cross of Riverman (USA) is also of interest as that stallion's dam River Lady (USA) (Prince John {USA}) is Rock Of Gibraltar's third dam - noting that those two stallions have combined in the pedigrees of 31 stakes winners.
Lot 145 - Capitalist x Rio Del Mar (bay/brown colt)
The second foal for a mare who was one of the best of WA's juveniles of her season - at just her second start winning the G3 Gimcrack S. - he is able to count amongst his relations the Group 1 gallopers Sober Suit (Noalcoholic {Fr}) and Titanic Jack (Encosta De Lago) and Hasahalo (NZ) (Savabeel) as well as the exciting unbeaten two times Group winning 2-year-old Captured By Love (Written Tycoon).
Capitalist is bred on a Vain/Mr Prospector (USA)/Danehill (USA) cross whilst Rio De Mar's sire Magnus is Danehill/Mr Prospector/Vain and the first Capitalist runner out of a Magnus mare is the stakes placed city winner Mission Value.
Lot 166 - King's Legacy x Sophia's Secret (chestnut filly)
Her dual Group 1-winning sire - a son of Redoute's Choice - has been well received with his first yearlings at the Gold Coast selling for up to $775,000.
Redoute's Choice combines nicely with Sophia's Secret's sire Written Tycoon; 20 stakes winners bred this way - horses line-bred to the wonderful mare Best In Show (USA) (Traffic Judge {USA}); ancestress of Redoute's Choice and grandam of Try My Best (USA).
A stakes placed dual city winner, Sophia's Secret was a $210,000 purchase as a broodmare and her first foal Top Secret (Dundeel {NZ}) was purchased by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott/Kestral Thoroughbreds for $160,000 at the Gold Coast.
This is a terrific family, one well represented at Group 1 level by Sky Cuddle (Snippets) and Prowess (NZ) (Proisir).
Lot 204 - Street Boss (USA) x Amelia's La Bout (bay colt)
A half-brother to the promising China Spirit (Shalaa {Ire}), he is out of one of those 'what might have been' mares - Amelia's La Bout (Hichinbrook) impressive racing away to an easy debut win at Ascot only to go amiss at her second outing.
She is a granddaughter of the Listed winner Mohave Dancer (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), dam of the five-time Group winner Natural Blitz and grandam of stakes winners Mohave Princess (Mount Nelson {GB}) and Man Of His Word (Lope De Vega {Ire}) from the family of Group 1 winner Des's Dream (NZ) (Dahar {USA}).
With her multiple strains of Northern Dancer (Can), Amelia's La Bout is a nice prospect for Street Boss (USA) who carries strains of that legendary stallion's close relations Machiavellian (USA) and Halo (USA) - a family which also produced Amelia's La Bout's great-grandsire Danehill (USA)... noting that Street Boss' best son Anamoe is out of a Danehill-line mare as is the Perth Group 1 winner Elite Street.
This colt is also line-bred to the great horse Damascus (USA) whilst also claiming him is a relation... Amelia's La Bout sixth dam being Damascus's dam Kerala (USA) (My Babu {Fr}).
Lot 205 - Playing God x Amelia's Missile (bay colt)
By Western Australia's most expensive stallion, he is the first foal for a full sister to the stakes placed Missile Coda (Smart Missile) whose G1 VRC Derby-winning son Riff Rocket (American Pharoah {USA}) made a spectacular return last weekend - charging home to an impressive G3 CS Hayes S. victory.
A descendant of the G1 Melbourne Cup winner Rainbird (The Buzzard {GB}), he can count amongst his relations the stakes winners Walk Alone (Honour And Glory {USA}), Rain Affair (Commands), Wayupinthesky (Snitzel), Ranges (Shooting To Win), Nan Tien (Jan Murray {USA}), Crying Storm (Torrential {USA}) and the classy stallion Centaine.
An interesting aspect to his pedigree is a cross of the great galloper Todman (second damsire of Playing God's damsire Rubiton), noting that three of the 18 Playing God winners line-bred to him are stakes winners.
