Tarpaulin ready to cover the Rosebud field

Race fitness and a weight advantage have trainer James Cummings quietly confident Tarpaulin (Harry Angel {Ire}) can get the jump on the opposition in Saturday’s Listed Rosebud at Rosehill. “The 1.5kg off Gatsby’s is attractive and the 5kg off Shangri La Express even more so,” Cummings told racingnsw.com.au.

“There’s good depth in the race and Tarpaulin couldn’t be more impressive coming through these races lately. Tarpaulin is nicely suited by the relative advantage in the handicap. He’s improving and he’s got to keep solidifying at this level before he’s got to tackle these horses at set weights.” Tarpaulin is a winner of two of his four starts at two, with both wins coming at his latest starts.

Dawn Service to step up into city class on Saturday

Dawn Service (Justify {USA}), the $1.4 million son of Group 1 winner Sunlight (Zoustar), runs at Rosehill on Saturday. “Any time a horse can step out at two or at any stage of their career earlier than most it’s going to be an advantage,” co-trainer Adrian Bott told racingnsw.com.au.

“You look at this preparation and if he’s to make the grade, which I think he can, he’s going to have to do it on the back of his first racing campaign. That’s a harder ask for him versus if you look at a couple of horses from our stable that raced at two, they’re naturally more seasoned and conditioned. He'll be better next time in, Dawn Service, having had this preparation and that’s when I think we can start to see the horse put it all together.”

Placed on debut, Dawn Service won at his second start. “It was a nice maiden win there last start, he’s got to take that next step again but he was impressive in the way he did it.”

Shinn bullish about Drifting

“I jumped her out last Friday, I was very impressed by the feel she gave me. Physically, she's a really solid 3-year-old, mentally, she's really there. She's got great gate speed, tactically she's brilliant, I expect her to put herself in a great position from a good draw. This is a great line-up of fillies, but I think she's a very talented horse.” Drifting won the G3 Magic Night S. at two.

Thursday’s 3-year-old winners

Newcastle’s meeting opened with the win by 3-year-old filly Runranirun (Press Statement) who is trained by Matthew Smith and was ridden by Jay Ford in a smashing 8.8l victory on debut. In second was Extreme Diva (Extreme Choice) was Group 2-placed as a 2-year-old.

By winning last Sunday's G1 Saratoga Derby Invitational, Carson's Run (USA) Cupid {USA}) secured a spot in the Ladbrokes G1 Cox Plate on October 26.

It's an invitation his connections are seriously considering.

I haven't talked to (trainer) Christophe Clement about it yet but we are definitely game.” No American-trained horse has run in the Cox Plate previously.

Gentian Blue tackles Caulfield

Cambridge trainer Maxim van Lierde will run Gentian Blue (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) at Caulfield on Saturday and thanked Lindsay Park for their help in preparing the horse. “Last year I took a horse called Henry Robin over to Lindsay Park and I spent over two weeks with them,” van Lierde told Loveracing.nz.

“I got on quite well with Will (Hayes, co-trainer) especially because I did quite a lot of track work with him. We have become good friends over the last year and the knowledge that they have got is second to none. He is very giving with his advice and knowledge, which has helped us immensely.”

Gentian Blue only managed eighth at her first Victorian start, but van Lierde believes she’s better than that. “It didn’t look very good to the eye but she was five weeks between runs and she had a bit of a virus when she got there. We were on the back foot a little bit, but she has come on immensely from the run.”

Sharrock one away from 1000 wins

New Plymouth-based trainer Allan Sharrock is chasing his 1000th New Zealand winner on Saturday with a big team and he only needs to win one more to achieve it. “999, the last one is always the hardest to get but it looks like we’ve got a really nice team on Saturday,” Sharrock told Loveracing.nz.

There are other possibilities, so we'll discuss plans with Sheikh Fahad and see where we end up.”
