Beadman collects a nice trial win ahead of the eye-catcher Vetwelve
The promising Snitzel colt Beadman looked very exciting when he closed out his juvenile season with a runaway victory by more than eight lengths in the G3 Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast in May, defeating the talented Sunrays (Hellbent).
After running a strong second at the trials earlier this month, Beadman returned today and backed it up with a solid narrow win, just accounting for Vetwelve (Grunt {NZ}), who produced an outstanding trial for John Sargent, pretty much untouched by jockey Molly Bourke.
Although he wasn't as visually as impressive as many may have thought given the boom on the well-bred colt, he looked well and strong, and looks ready to make his mark on the track when he resumes shortly.
The million-dollar earner Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert) was solid in third and looks ready to resume for trainer Bjorn Baker.
Beadman was a $900,000 purchase by China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy from Arrowfield Stud at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. In recent years, Beadman’s dam Iffranesia (Fr) has left a yearling colt by Snitzel, and was due to foal to Dundeel (NZ) late last month.

Memo weaves between runners nicely to score
The Group 3 Magic Night Stakes-winning juvenile Memo (Capitalist) had a nice tick-over trial at Randwick on Tuesday, scoring in a blanket finish over 1050 metres from Peace Officer (NZ) (Iffraaj) and Getafix (Calyx {GB}).

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, Memo settled nicely about fourth with cover before weaving between runners to score under minimal pressure, while the big grey Getafix loomed strongly down the outside under a stranglehold from James McDonald.
Memo resumed in the G2 Furious Stakes, where she finished ninth after struggling to get into the race from well back. However, this latest effort should serve as a valuable confidence-booster ahead of her next campaign run.
A $350,000 purchase for Snowden Racing from Newgate Farm’s draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Memo is the second foal bred by Love Racing from the G3 Tibbie Stakes runner-up Notation (Fastnet Rock), a daughter of G1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Chocolicious (Saf) (Kahal {GB}). Notation has a 2-year-old colt by Stay Inside, and was due to foal to Capitalist late last month.

Roselyn’s Star strong throughout
Sandpaper (Snitzel) led the heat before being restrained, allowing Valiant Bomb (Frosted {USA}) to roll forward, but in the meantime the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained Roselyn’s Star (Shalaa {Ire}) loomed ominously under a hold in the hands of Zac Lloyd. The promising 3-year-old Farnicles (Farnan) found the line solidly for second under some urging, while Sandpaper battled on strongly for third along the inside.

Bred by Arrowfield and Redbank, Roselyn’s Star was offered through the Arrowfield draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where the John O’Shea Ladies Syndicate secured him for $220,000.
He is the third foal of the stakes-placed Dual Star (Starcraft {NZ}), who has also produced the Shalaa stakes-placed dual city winner Shalstar.
Dual Star is a daughter of the city-placed winner Dual Diamond (Redoute’s Choice) and is now owned by Orbis Bloodstock. She has a 3-year-old filly named Starvecchio (Castevecchio) who has been a winner at her only start, a Doubtland yearling colt, and is due to foal to Shalaa (Ire) early next month.

Augusta National is one to watch
One unraced but well-bred type caught the eye in Heat 7, the 1050-metre maiden, with the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained Augusta National (Zoustar) scoring impressively under jockey Tommy Berry.

The Zoustar colt did it the tough way, trapped three wide without cover, but that proved no concern as he loomed up soon after straightening and put the trial to bed. Green Spring (Lucky Vega {Ire}) charged late for second, while Cadillac Sam (Zoustar) stuck on well for third.
Augusta National was purchased by Rosemont Stud, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and John O’Shea for $625,000 from the Rosemont Stud draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Zealously a bit too strong for Overpass
All eyes may have been on Overpass (Vancouver), the Bjorn Baker-trained $10.5 million earner, who was making his first public appearance since contesting the G1 Doomben 10,000 Stakes during the winter. But he had to settle for second in his return trial, edged out by Zealously (Harry Angel {Ire}), who scored narrowly but stylishly under minimal urging from jockey Kerrin McEvoy, with Polyglot (Lonhro) also catching the eye running third for trainer Michael Freedman.
The Peter Snowden-trained 4-year-old gelding has been a consistent performer, but this effort suggests he could be back bigger and better.
Zealously is the first foal of Duenna (Sepoy), a 1200-metre winner, from a strong family that includes Group 1 winners Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) and Madame Pommery (No Nay Never {USA}), as well as the stakes winner Palomares (Commands).
Since producing Zealously, Duenna has left a 3-year-old gelding named Sparkling Fire (Trapeze Artist), a 2-year-old colt by Trapeze Artist, and a filly foal by the same sire.
