The dam of this impressive Hawaii Five Oh filly is Colorado Claire, a daughter of Hussonet (USA). She was a Group 2 winner on the track and has already proven herself as a broodmare, leaving five winners, including the G2 Todman winner Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt).
Hawaii was bred to be smart – and lived up to it
Being by I Am Invincible and out of the Group 1-winning mare Aloha (Encosta De Lago), who hails from a strong family, the pressure was always going to be on Hawaii Five Oh to deliver on the track. His dam had also already produced the $1.95 million earner Libertini (I Am Invincible), a Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed sprinter.
Hawaii Five Oh did respond to that pressure and started with a bang, winning his debut as an August 3-year-old for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, before finishing third in the Listed Heritage Stakes at his second start. Returning in the autumn, he claimed the G3 Hawkesbury Guineas and G3 Fred Best Classic, then finished third in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap behind Group 1-winning older horses Think About It (So You Think {NZ}) and Rothfire (Rothesay).
At four, he ran second in the G2 Premiere Stakes, splitting Think About It and Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai), before running sixth in the G1 The Everest.

A family full of strong blood
Colorado Claire (Hussonet {USA}) was a classy filly who won five races up to 1500 metres, including the G2 Phar Lap Stakes where she proved too strong for the boys. She was also placed in the Listed Triscay Stakes and finished fourth in the G3 Golden Pendant.
She is out of the dual Listed winner Lunaspur (Flying Spur) and is a half-sister to Moonovermanhattan (Manhattan Rain), winner of the G2 Dilmah Vase and G3 National Stakes.
Another star on the page is Lucky Bubbles (Sebring), an eight-time winning sprinter whose victories included the G1 Hong Kong Chairman’s Sprint Prize. He earned over HK$30 million in prizemoney.

Colorado Claire has already been a strong producer, leaving five winners. Among them is Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt), who won the G2 Todman Stakes before transferring to Hong Kong, where he became a six-time winning sprinter.
Adam White emphasised the importance of mares like Colorado Claire for a young stallion’s book:
“These good running mares are what you need to get these young stallions off the mark. She was a Group 2 herself who has already produced a Group 2-winning 2-year-old.

“Early on, it is a great mare for him to get and to produce a filly like this is very pleasing.”
“She has good strength, looks powerful, good quality and is a really nice filly.”

Hawaii Five Oh is a chip off the old block
It’s little surprise that Hawaii Five Oh’s foals take after the I Am Invincible mould. Like ‘Vinnie’, he is big, strong and powerful, and it’s encouraging to see those traits passed down the line.
“We have five Hawaii Five Ohs on the ground now at Vinery and they are all very similar. They have great strength, are strong and powerful looking horses, that are reasonably short coupled that should be able to get up and go a bit. This filly is very much built in that mould,” White said

“At this stage, he looks bay dominant like his father which is great, and they have good quality heads which is also a trait of the ‘Vinnies’.
“We have had plenty of good I Am Invincibles on the farm ourselves and there are a lot of comparisons you can make. They look to be built in a very similar mould to Vinnie, and they are very good in the legs.”
He’s been a popular boy - and Colorado Claire heads back that way
Hawaii Five Oh was well supported in his first season, serving 173 mares, and looks set to cover a similar number this spring on the back of the quality of his foals and the confidence he’s generated.
“He will cover a similar book of around 170 this spring which is a great number. There has been plenty of positive talk, particularly around the Hunter Valley, without being generated which is great," White commented

“We have also heard good word from the foals from Victoria and Queensland also. It’s always nice when he pops into conversations and it happens naturally.
“He is a nice fertile young horse, which is important and he is giving breeders every chance. He is quite a tall horse, with plenty of scope, and breeders are utilising that and sending the smaller type of mares and he is producing the right type of foal. They have great strength, so he is quite easy to breed to.”

On the strength of her latest filly, Colorado Claire will return to Hawaii Five Oh this season.
“She heads back to Hawaii Five Oh on the back of this filly, we are very happy with her.”
