Emotional double for Prebble and Belvedere Road
Broodmare Belvedere Road (Street Boss {USA}) produced a pair of winners at Caulfield on Saturday with 3-year-old gelding Clevor Trever (Omaha Beach {USA}) and Jimmy The Bear (Jimmy Creed {USA}), and the pair have former jockey Tom Prebble in the ownership.
Both are trained by Patrick Payne, whose sister Maree is Tom’s mother. Prebble, who was paralysed in a fall last September, now works for his uncle doing social media. “He’s going good Tommy,” said stable representative Neil Grieve.
“He’s going to be the main social media guy at the farm. He’s a lovely fellow Tom, so hopefully things can be as good as they can be. People don’t see it with Patrick, but he always goes out of his way to help people that are struggling. Patrick is a very generous person and he’s just a genius with a horse.”
Jimmy The Bear, who won the Listed Winter Championship Final in July last year, took his record to 13 wins and over $1.5 million, while Clevor Trever has now won three in succession from his five starts and has earnings over $160,000. Belvedere Road has also produced one other runner, Jimmy The Beaver (Jimmy Creed {USA}) who has clocked up a pair on wins to date.
Belvedere Road, who won four times, has a yearling colt by Ghaiyyath (Ire) and was covered by Henry Longfellow (Ire) in 2025.
Athanatos wins G3 BRC Lord Mayor’s Cup
Phillip Stokes-trained Athanatos (I Am Immortal) came into Saturday’s G3 Lord Mayor’s Cup from victory in The Coast, and he clung on to beat the fast finishing Chris Waller-trained Militarize (Dundeel {NZ}) by a nose. Future History (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) was third for trainer Gregory Hickman.
“He'd want to go to the paddock after this. He has had a really good prep and he's just gone to another level since he's been here. He's thriving up here but probably a spell and we might aim him at something like the Five Diamonds,” Stokes said.
The win was his second at Group 3 level and he took his record to five wins from 24 starts with earnings just under the $1 million mark. One of three winners for Mumbeilly (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), Athanatos did not go through a public auction.
G3 Hyperion Stakes won by Western Empire
Grant and Alana Williams-trained Western Empire (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) continues to defy his age, winning Saturday’s G3 Hyperion Stakes with jockey William Pike. The 8-year-old gelding won the G3 Belmont Sprint last start. This win takes his record to 13 wins from 37 starts with earnings over $3.6 million.
Twelve of his 13 wins have been at stakes level, led by the 2021 G1 Railway Handicap. A half-brother to Listed winner Western Temple (Dream Ahead {USA}), he is out of G2 Perth Cup winner Western Jewel (Jeune {GB}) who won eight times.
Quinella in G3 BRC Premier’s Cup for Waterhouse/Bott
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Alalcance (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) beat home stablemate Bella Montagna (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) in Saturday’s G3 BRC Premier’s Cup over 2400 metres. Only a quarter of a length separated the two on the line with nearly six lengths back to Ciaron Maher-trainer Royal Supremacy (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) in third.
"I thought getting up to this distance would be suitable. A little bit of softness in the ground we certainly welcomed today and the further the better for her,” Bott said of the winner.
“Bella Montagna is a very nice, progressive filly and they've both been up here with the Brisbane Cup in mind.” Alalcance took her record to six wins from 18 starts with prizemoney over $720,000.
Costin defies instructions in Listed ATC Lord Mayor’s Cup
Jockey Winona Costin went against her riding instructions from trainer Matt Smith on Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill, and won anyway. “I did everything you told me not to do. I was supposed to be one-off and let Portland build to the outside in the straight,” Costin told connections afterwards.
“But from the 600m onwards all the runs kept opening up for me so I let him build into the race. He enjoyed the track conditions today and all he wanted to do was win. He kept poking his nose out in the straight, it was a tough effort.”
The import was having his sixth start in Australia and this was his first win here. The 5-year-old gelding had previously been a Listed winner in Ireland and placed in the 2023 G1 Saint-Cloud Criterium International. Smith purchased him for 135,000 gns (AU$266,000) at the 2024 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale.
Pinatubo colt wins at Werribee
Yulong’s 2-year-old colt Tales Of Time (Pinatubo {Ire}) hadn’t raced since running second on debut in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate, and trainer Clinton McDonald gave him a soft target on Saturday at Werribee where he duly saluted by 2.5 lengths.
YLP Racing purchased him for $170,000 from Milburn Creek’s draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, and he is the second foal and only winner for Cinderella (I Am Invincible). She won three times and is a half-sister to Group 1 winner and sire Sizzling who will move to Tasmania for the upcoming breeding season.
Ride of the day for Stanley
In the last at Caulfield, the whole field swung wide except Jett Stanley on Hezdarnhottoo (NZ) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), who stuck to the rail and won by 1.75 lengths. "I’ve been watching races all day and riding in those races and I just couldn’t wrap my head (around) when the rail is in the true and hasn’t been raced on in 10 weeks how the outside was so much better than the inside," Stanley said.
"Watching the old replays in the 80s or 90s when no one was there (inside) the whole day and then someone would sneak up. Like Pumper (Jim) Cassidy or Jeff Lloyd or someone like that. You don’t become great following people and being a sheep. You’ve got to put your neck on the line.
"I would either be a genius or an idiot, and turned out to be a genius."
Juvenile winner for Rich Enuff
At Morphettville, Jon O'Connor-trained 2-year-old gelding Neveu (Rich Enuff) won at his second start, having run second on debut behind Never Ordinary (Dirty Work) who won at Listed level in her following start.
Not offered at auction, Neveu is the only foal of Bubbles McGinty (Akeed Mofeed {GB}) who won twice.
Juvenile winner for Lucky Vega
At Pakenham on Friday night, second season sire Lucky Vega (Ire) added a juvenile winner when Ben Brisbourne-trained Fontein Jewel galloped to a 2.75 length victory. The colt was having his third start and had been fourth in the VOBIS Gold Rush last start.
He is the first foal of Fontein Diamond (Turffontein), a five-time winning half-sister to Listed winner Written Up (Written Tycoon).
Universal Ruler juvenile wins in Perth
West Australian sire Universal Ruler added a juvenile winner on Saturday when Adam Durrant-trained Swift Ruler lived up to his name and won by 2.2 lengths over 1300 metres. It was the 2-year-old gelding’s third start, having placed last start.
Raced by Oakland Park Stud and partners, he is out of four-time winner Fast As The Wind (Blackfriars) who has produced two other winners.
Double for Yes Yes Yes
Yes Yes Yes celebrated a double at Queensland’s Julia Creek with Pear Bellini and Affirmative Light.
Now standing at Gooree Stud, Yes Yes Yes also enjoyed a city winner at Rosehill with 3-year-old filly All The Way Mae, while Demmo Dermi won at Illawarra Grange.
First winner for State Of Rest
Rathbarry Stud, and Newgate Farm, have not had too long to wait for the first winner for their first-season shuttle sire State Of Rest as Anad scored on debut at Wolverhampton on Friday.
Sent off the 2-1 favourite for the extended seven-furlong fillies' novice, the Karl Burke-trained €150,000 (AU$243,000) Goffs Orby Book 2 topper raced in rear throughout the early stages.
Sent forward by Clifford Lee on the home turn, Alanood Althani's colour-bearer was notably green after hitting the front a furlong out but firmly in command as she registered a head verdict over Shadwell's Mohaymenah by their first-crop sire Minzaal. There was another 3.5 lengths back to Angel Sense (Harry Angel) in third.
The Listed-placed dam, Duchess Of Danzig (Sea The Stars) is a daughter of the dual Group 3 winner and Preis der Diana runner-up Djumama (Aussie Rules), whose three other Stakes performers are headed by the Listed scorer and triple Group 3-placed Samahram (Sea The Moon).
Electron surprises in Kiwi Listed race
Saturday’s Listed AGC Training Stakes WFA Stakes at Wanganui was won by outsider Sam Mynott-trained Electron (NZ) (Turn Me Loose {NZ}). Previously Group 3-placed, Electron became the ninth stakes winner for her sire. “We weren’t going to come here but she nearly made me fall off when working last week and she was bolting around the paddock,” Mynott said. Electron has won six of her 30 starts and almost NZ$200,000.
“She deserved this and I had said to Mereana (Hudson) we might try and lead, but she has done well and the horse is just really tough. She does need the stars to align at this level, which they did today, and I knew she had a Listed win in her. She’s very special, my little $1000 gavelhouse.com purchase and she will go to the paddock now.”
One of three winners for Chemistry (Shamardal {USA}), Electron is the first stakes winner in the family since her third dam Klokka (Marscay) who won the G2 Magic Night Stakes and four other group races. Electron’s second dam Tick By (Zabeel {NZ}) placed in the G1 Queensland Oaks.
Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo sold
GI Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo (Liam's Map) has been sold to ESPOIR USA, Inc. for an undisclosed amount, according to a report by the Daily Racing Form's David Grening.
Previously owned by Al Golds's Gold Square LLC, the two-time Grade I winner will remain with trainer Chad Summers who told Grening, “Very appreciative of everything that Al did to get us to this point. It's going to feel awkward putting different blinkers and different silks on him, but Napoleon's still Napoleon and we're excited to make him champion 3-year-old at the end of the year, and they can hold the trophy up together,” Summers said. “I'm appreciative of the new owner allowing us to keep the horse.”
Napoleon Solo remains on target for the GI Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park July 18. The colt's new connections plan to race him next year as a 4-year-old. At the conclusion of his racing career, he will retire to Lane's End.
